Tesla and Rivian charging networks have fewest problems by far, according to Consumer Reports

The most problem-free EV charging networks in the U.S. right now are the ones built by Tesla and Rivian, according to a new survey from Consumer Reports.

The publication surveyed 1,230 owners on their EV charging experiences between March 2024 and February 2024, and just 4% of the respondents said they experienced problems at Tesla’s Supercharger network. Only 5% said they experienced problems using Rivian’s Adventure Network chargers.

RJ's reaction:

Love this. We developed our high charging hardware with a central focus on reliability and uptime. Excited to see it expand!

Ok, hold on. You can't look at data without taking sample size and rules of statics—and how data can be misinterpreted—into consideration. Supercharger is much larger. So the comparison being drawn here is not of two equals. Will RAN be just as good when it reaches the same size?

Not taking away how good RAN is. But, let's be honest, it's also a very small network that many just don't have access to or experience with.

Shame it’s so expensive now
Folly to expect DCFC to be cheap. Was always going to be more costly than home charging. And by how much depends on what the associated local utility charges. I pick my times at Supercharger and still play less per kWh than what home owners pay one county north.

My nearest in Lynnwood WA is $0.65.

That is 5 times local residential rate of $0.13.

The nearest Tesla chargers are $0.23 to $0.49 (time dependent ), so not competitive.

I have never seen more than 1 of 9 in use when I have looked via the app.

The rest of the world doesn't live with you or near you. Los Angeles County residents pay close to 49¢ for home charging... likely higher during peak hours.

Completely agree. Giving Tesla credit, when I had my Model S, it was VERY rare to find a charger that was out of service. I supercharged a lot as I had free lifetime charging. I haven't used a RAN yet as it is too far, and now too expensive.

On the other hand, I have 3 year EA charging with my Lucid and every time I try to use it one or more of the chargers is down wherever I go. I just checked and the EA in my town (which only has 4 pedestals for a population of ~180000!) currently has one of the 4 out of service.

Exactly. The EA I used to use here in the OC, 6 dispensers, line of cars at midnight on any given Saturday or Sunday with usually one or two dispensers down. The Supercharger a few miles away, 16 dispensers total and all working, 4 to 6 in use at the same time frame. Last May, it was 27¢ with membership, from 11 PM to 4AM. Now 34¢ and completely open after 11 PM... Probably because the Tesla owners are now worried about being out late and hanging at the back of an empty strip mall ?. It's been great!

I live in Huntington Beach and feel like you just described my EA experience here when my truck’s L2 charger broke.

He didn't say he wanted RAN to be "cheap." He said "so expensive." You focused only on his home rate. Tesla Superchargers are also DCFC, are also more costly than home charging, yet are significantly less expensive than his nearby RAN.

If his nearest Tesla Supercharger *peak* rate is $0.49, and nearest RAN is $0.65, that is 33% more and is a valid apples to apples comparison that has nothing to do with the rest of the world not living near him or LA County's rates. If the RAN rates were comparable to nearby Tesla Superchargers, you'd likely not see such comments.

And in the last three months it’s been mostly me; using up those last sweet free referral months.

Sure RAN is a much smaller network but it's a % not an overall number. Makes a difference.
