I don't disagree, but If they did do something I could see a scenario where they take "the skateboard" and do some custom assembly on top of that themselves. The skateboard is really the hard part(and not Amazon's forte). If you think about the modular/utilitarian nature of a delivery vehicle it's really just a rolling metal box on the skateboard.Well, it takes two to tango and I'm pretty sure RJ doesn't want to dance and, as long as Rivian is a good partner to Amazon, there's no reason to acquire Rivian.
Amazon is better off with a highly motivated partner rather than a less well motivated, less energetic subsidiary it has to manage. We work harder when we're working for our own benefit. Amazon is already getting what it wants - a well managed firm with leading edge technology that's going balls to the walls to build the vehicles you need and want.
The only reason to acquire Rivian is if Rivian isn't meeting your needs, and you're willing to absorb the costs of taking over and managing another company to get what you want. That doesn't seem to be the case.
Rivian is dedicating an assembly line to Amazon vans, it's adding more square footage to the Normal plant, some of which is likely Amazon-specific in purpose, and Rivian and Amazon are undoubtedly working together on logistics and autonomous vehicle software.
We might have to wait a little longer to get our Rivian orders filled, but I doubt Amazon will. As long as Rivian is doing its upmost to satisfy Amazon's needs for energy efficient delivery and logistics, there's no reason to acquire Rivian. Indeed, doing so will likely reduce the value of Rivian to Amazon.
