Got to experience the Mobile Service team visit me today in NorCal. My stock horn (I know, I know, ...) started to sound broken and had to be replaced.

Excellent experience and the perfect weather to watch and learn. Whole front bumper had to come off, something I would have never attempted myself, but having seen how it is done, it's definitely in the realm of possibilities if this ever had to be done. took about an hour to come off. Steady work but not rushed. Replacing the horn is a 10 min task and re-installing the bumper maybe 30 min - so round about 2h of work.

Was interesting to get to see all the components behind the bumper.

In the end the OEM 400Hz horn was replaced with a new one and sounds at least back to what it was on day one.

Excellent service experience and way more work that I thought mobile service would be willing to do. Great learning experience.

What exactly is a real horn? It could be the pointed projection from an animal's head with an opening for forced air.
Or a dangerous navigational area at the tip of South America.

or a device that makes a really loud sound of warning that other people can hear, even if they are in an enclosed space on wheels…with music playing.

Did they repair the neutered sound of the horn too?

Is it really 400 Hz? Based on sound I think it's the 400 Hz they removed from production and kept the 300 Hz. I added a 400 Hz Hella and the two together is far more effective at alerting inattentive drivers of your presence. How did your horn fail? Did you happen to ford bodies of water? IIRC, Owner Guide has/had a passage that warned of crossing water at speed and allowing the horn to ingest too much water. It recommended blasting the horn a few times afterwards to help evacuate water [to prevent corrosion].

Not likely. It's a 1-to-1 replacement. Same parts.

Very interesting how he removed the front bumper to get at it. I have a front parking sensor that is "falling in" that I have had a ticket in for, but not an appointment because I don't want to live without the R1S for 3 weeks. They said it would require a SC visit and it looks like a mobile repair is possible.

I understand the horn here wasn't functioning correctly, but I have to laugh everytime people get excited about the horn. It seems there are two types of people in this world, those who rarely touch the horn and those who drive everywhere with one hand on it.

That depends on where you live I think. Densely populated area like SoCal, where lots of people drive distracted, an effective horn is essential equipment. I don't mean we use it all-the-f'ing-time. We just want it to be effective when we do.

yes definitely 400Hz:

And like for like replacement.
Good enough for what I need. Now that it has been fixed it’s plenty loud on the outside. Given how it is mounted it is a lot quieter from within the vehicle.

Thanks for verifying. Either they kept the 400 Hz all along, or they switched to it, in response to complaints.

According to the mobile service technician there are various setups they had over the years. First two then one on the driver side now one on the passenger side that no longer requires removal of the bumper to get to it. Don’t know what model or Gen1 to Gen2 differences.

The cut-offs are unknown to public. I think they went from two to one, keeping driver side, in late '22 or early '23 (around same time they went to single 12V if I'm not mistaken). Then relocated that single horn to passenger side in '24. Not sure where gen2 has theirs. Haven't seen much technical content from owners on gen2—just a lot of complaints on audio, heat pump, climate, on and on...

Can confirm my early 2023 R1S (vin 61XX) has the single horn (driver side). Have debated doing the aftermarket upgrade but haven't pulled the trigger yet (partially due to concern over breaking clips removing the frunk & ending up with a bigger project).

I've done it. June '23 build. Get an assortment of automotive trim clips (Amazon has kits and past threads may have recommendations to specific ones). You will break some and will probably resort to cutting some of the more stubborn ones. Your replacements may not be identical to ones Rivian used. But as long as they are close enough to function, that's all you need. Overall, it's not difficult especially if you have a helper. I have unused leftover Deutch connectors I can give you, for making plug and play harness (will have to dig them out from one of many storage bins and revisit relevant threads to make sure I send you the correct ones). DM me.

I heard the original horns had two sounds, a high and low, and that they removed the low sound.
