I saw this post about the G1 Medium Gunner and wanted to make a Small G1 version. I took delivery of my R1S this month, I am coming from a Model Y and was looking for the extra space for a growing family (2 dogs, a baby and 2-3 adults riding in the car most times).

We have two small FMDs from Taiwan (shoutout to the rescue Mary's Doggies for their amazing work). Their 2 small G1 crates fit OK in the trunk of the Model Y but left no room for anything large like a normal sized stroller/wagon or suitcase due to the sloped back of the MY. We always ended up putting the stroller in the front which then blocked a seat for an adult.

I was finally able to set up my two small G1 Gunner Kennels in the trunk of the R1S with the third row down. They fit perfectly side by side, leaving some room on either side for small bags. Depending on how you tie them down you can also leave a good ~6" of space between them if they are pushed to either side completely. These crates have reversible doors so I swapped one of them so they open like french doors for easier access.

Tie Downs 2-3 clicks from the end of the track.

One thing I hadn't thought about when purchasing my Liner X floor mats is that the cargo mats cover the tie-down rails. Looking back it's very clear in their pictures that these are blocked. I didn't want to return these and they match the other rows, so I ended up cutting the mats with an X-acto knife to reveal the tracks. I am using the tie-downs for the front of the crates and the car seat anchors on the back of the second row for the back of the crates. They are tied down pretty solid now.

R1S + 2 Small Gunner Kennels. Second row is as reclined back as it goes and the crates don't go over the lid of the sub-trunk.

The G1 Small crates ALMOST fit behind the third row but the space is about 2" too short. I, however, knew this would be the case thanks to this very helpful post.

One Small G1 DOES fit in the space behind the third row when placed sideways, if you only have one dog this would be ideal. (Need to take a photo of this but I'm too lazy to undo my tie-downs). The good thing about the crates being completely on top of the third row seats is that they are not sloped.

We have an Uppababy Cruz V2 stroller and it fits perfectly in the cargo space with the crates installed on top of the third row, leaving all 5 remaining seats open for people to ride in. Hope this is helpful to someone with the same setup!

I found that the Pet Lodge small DD 28x20x19h fits behind the 3rd row. If you need the extra seating.
