New to Rivian but very familiar with Tesla supercharging. We have a big roadtrip at the beginning of March. We have 6 free months of free RAN charging.

-since we have free RAN charging do I need to have a credit card on file in the Rivan app (I suspect I do for idle fees)

-if my Tesla account email is the same as my Rivian account email will I get the Tesla member discount rate if I plug and charge (I saw a post in the forums about this but most people say need to initiate charge with Tesla app before plugging in to get the member rate discount)

-according to the Rivian app Chargepoint is their supported network. We will need to charge at the Chargepoint in Sheridan, WY. Will that be plug and charge or do I initiate with my Chargepoint app?

Thanks for any advice. I want to be prepared for all of this as I can get very cranky with charging issues on long roadtrips. Very happy that we won't have to touch a single EA charger on this trip.

1) if you have a cc on file with Rivian then yes, RAN will be plug and charge

2) not sure but plug and charge works at Tesla at the spot rate. Not sure how to get the member rate….pretty sure it’s been covered in multiple threads here though.

3) no Chargepoint is not plug and charge as far as I know.

1. You need a CC on file (to cover potential idle fees) even with free charging.

2. You can't get Telsa member rate except by authorizing in the Tesla app - no member rate with plug-and-charge.

3. Rivian doesn't support "standard CCS plug-and-charge" yet. So no plug-and-charge on ChargePoint or Electrify America. The ChargePoint integration allows you to start the charge in the Rivian app instead of needing the ChargePoint app, for simplified billing; but doesn't support plug-and-charge.

(Unrelated - EVgo has "Autocharge+" which operates similarly to plug-and-charge, but billed directly through EVgo. You set it up in the EVgo app, and it bills through EVgo, but does authorize billing when you plug in - no app or screen-interaction required. Although I have some security concerns about it.)

Caveat on EVGo, plug and charge still works on my R1S, did a charge a couple of weeks ago but my understanding is over the last year people were not able to set it up and EVGo support says it is no longer supported.

I’d be interested if anyone has successfully set EVGo up on their Rivian recently.

Still works on my truck, but I set it up when it was first offered. I used it on a road trip last month.

To get Tesla membership rate you must initiate session through Tesla app. Plug-n-charge defaults to non-Tesla rate. The back end process for P&C does not verify if you are a member. Only if you have valid payment associated with your non-Tesla.

I have only used L2 Chargepoint. Sessions had to be initiated with Chargepoint app (and valid cc on file with that app). AFAIK, it is not an official Rivian partner. Not promoted as such anywhere. It’s only integration of locations in nav. I don’t believe there is P&C integration. Google search and verify.

EVgo tried to implement P&C couple years ago and many could not get it to work. Do not know if they resolved it since all EVgo sites near me are hot trash.

Thanks guys. As I thought. It would be nice if someday P&C works at superchargers and allows the member discount. Doesn't seem that complicated but then again muskrat has no desire to promote EV ownership unless it's one of his which are a no go for us.

It may not be complicated, technically. But it would require some sort of data sharing and verification between the two parties... and all the apprehension regarding data privacy and potential liabilities. The idea has been floated before, almost as soon as Supercharger access became available. Would be nice, but at the same time a few extra seconds to initiate sessions manually isn't going to kill anyone.

I just entered a 2025 R1S VIN (found on an online vehicle sale listing) into the EVgo app, and it says it's ready to enroll, no complaint about unsupported.

Side note - my Ford Mach-E supports proper CCS Plug-and-Charge, but there is no way to get a member discount on either Tesla or Electrify America on it. Apparently when the Mach-E very first launched, it was possible on EA, (you would subscribe to EA through the Ford app) but that went away by the time I got my Mach-E, and even when you could, it would only enroll your Ford - you couldn't use that EA membership on other vehicles the way you can when you enroll in EA membership directly through the EA app.

There just doesn't seem to be any agreement in any of the P&C ecosystem to link charge-chain-memberships to vehicle-payment to allow for discounted charging.

To get the discounted tesla rate, you’ve got to first opt in at $12.99/month and then initiate the charge through the tesla app. (You *CAN* plug and play but you will pay the full tesla SC rate.) The discounted subscription of $12.99 generally breaks even at 100kW or so.

Newbie question on P&C at Superchargers. I am assuming it would work in Canada, right?
