I just surveyed Washington RAN and Tesla SC near them. That $.44 Tesla SC is Moses lake, far from Spokane. Liberty Lake is down the road from that Spokane Mall RAN and charges $.54.

It seems Rivian is finally implementing market prices, good for them. I'm ready to see a Rivian membership pricing model.

This place on the Big Island charges…wait for it…

$3.00/kWh ?

I know a hack to get it much cheaper (sometimes even free), but it’s ridiculous even for Hawaii.

Prices are usually set by whoever owns the site. In this case it’s a Hyundai dealership.

Do we know if Rivian sets the prices at RAN’s or if it’s the landowner on which the RAN is located?
You win. That’s got to be a record.

Those numbers don’t sound so high to me, we have solar but if not these are our SoCal rates, summer rates peak is 50 cents.

Oof! Your off peak is $0.39? I hope you have room for solar. Your break even would be here before you know it.

except california in its infinite wisdom ended straight net metering about 2 years ago, and you only get credited 15-20% of the rate to put electricity back in the system. this means you likely need to get a home battery as well. which works well enough for storing energy to be used at night, but does nothing to address uneven usage across many days, vacations, travel, seasonal variance etc. solar installs in CA are down about 75% over 2 years ago.

payback period is still 7-10ish years with a home battery.

also OPs stats don’t include a .10$ basic credit that applies to usage below a reasonable amount. off peak rates in california are more accurately described around $.26-.31 depending on utility and season. at least it’s not hawaii prices

This is one of the reasons why someone who can't charge at home probably shouldn't buy an EV (from a financial point).

You don't really save any money on a road trip in an EV verse gas, at least my experience, unless you consider your first "tank" is cheaper because you charged from home, and your last "tank" is cheaper because you fill up when you get home.

This can also cause confusion for new EV customers, not knowing the price before they pull up to charge. They will assume its the same as last time they did it. Electric prices can vary throughout the day, depends on location, season, etc. It varies for their home also, but they may not know or care since they do the same thing at home day to day, verse the occasional road trip that requires charging.

That's $22 per gallon of gas equivalent now. No way this makes sense any more. Good luck EVs.

Trolling misinformation. It's nowhere near $22/gallon. About the same as Tesla chargers for non Tesla drivers, which has always been on the high side for road side charging. I avoid Tesla products as I prefer not to do business with a sociopath. Most people charge at home 90% of the time so for most the cost at road side chargers is a non issue. The overall savings in fuel cost plus all the other advantages of an EV are making ICE vehicles less relevant every day. Electric mobility is the trend worldwide the internet trolling cannot stop. Drive well.

Certainly is a short pay off, with a battery it is around 51 months. It has been a little over 36 months so far. With net metering I’ve had my R1S 2 years and paid the power company a total of 34 dollars.

I read somewhere that it’s about $200,000/ charger to install, but Tesla does it for $40,000. No idea if that’s true. I charge at home in SoCal, very high rates, but have rooftop solar. On the road (maybe 5-6 times/yr) EA and Tesla are about $.60, a little less with memberships. The savings really are from home charging. We have a RAV4 Prime, and a 400 mile trip to NoCal is very close to the same cost. Maybe an hour longer in the EV.

One gallon of gas is 33.7kwh. just multiply the two numbers.

In other math, $.68 / 2.4 miles per kwh is $.28 per mile which is my overall efficiency.

Our gx470 at 20mpg and $5 per gallon would be $.25 per mile. This means that the rivian in an overall energy sense, with their sustainable new charging infrastructure, is worse than 20mpg. Whatever claim of mpge is just inefficiency pushed somewhere else in their system.
GX470 gets approx 15/19 for MPGs so your equations is based on an unlikely best case scenario for the GX470, and worst case for the Rivian. Most EV owners charge primarily at home (where rates are typically less than half or even 1/3 of the .68 quoted for DC Fast Charging)....So you are correct....IF (big if) the owner relies solely on DC fast charging, and seeks out the most expensive chargers they can find...

Thankfully our rate in eastern Washington is .08 per kWh off peak, which makes our local driving much cheaper than gas. We do about one or two trips per month that require the use of fast chargers. So overall, I think we end up paying less than we would at the gas pump. Regardless, I didn't by my R1S to save money on gas.
