Except in winter, then that waste energy is cabin heat at little/no cost to efficiency.
True, except for all the additional fuel used at startup to heat the cat and warm up the coolant. Cabin heat isn't the silent killer of range that everyone calls it out to be.

While of course I dislike paying more, if it encourages more stations to be built, I consider it an early adopter tax. Most early adopters still get the overwhelming majority of their energy from charging at home.

Of the 3,936 kwh I've put into my truck since last June, only 238kwh have been DCFC, so ~94% at home or free destination chargers.

Sure a gallon of gas has 33.7 kWh energy...a shame ICE's waste a minimum of 60 percent of that energy!
If you’re angry about that, you should see how much worse the efficiency is when charging an EV off a fossil-fueled grid. /s

Sure, but there's still waste heat going on. ICE's need radiators even in winter and it doesn't change the fact that the motor is 40 percent efficient at best (Prius)...often less.

The grid is only getting cleaner, here in MI the two major utilities have committed to closing down all coal plants. Nationally, renewables are coming online at a record pace. Plus, I know many that have PV on their own home. Sure fossil fuels are going to part of the grid but if it's just NG turbines as Peaker plants some day, that's all good.

Rates are not universal coast to coast. Nor is it always the same in any 24 hour period. Pricing depends on location, cost of land lease and pricing of the utility that supplies the electricity. 68¢ is not unheard of at Tesla, Chargepoint, EA or EVgo. Nothing new. Nothing to freak out over. If you expect DCFC to be same cost as home charging… why would anyone think that? Different utility pricing for residential and commercial is a preexisting condition.

If Rivian is going to eventually open up to all EV‘s, they have to charge market rates for the charging. Also, it’s very difficult to charge a set price across the board because they may have demand pricing and certain locations at certain times..

I would expect Rivian when they open it up to do what Tesla is doing currently and that is to charge a retail rate and then a membership rate. It’s pretty standard across the industry.

??? Gas fired power plants are more efficient than your average ICE. Plus the grid depends less and less on fossil fuels

The /s at the end means I was being sarcastic, I was just echoing bad information for humor.

They are doing that already at the sites that are open. You can check Joshua Tree, it is 74 cents for others, 63 cents for Rivian.

The only thing they have not started is a membership program. My guess is they would start that when more sites were open but honestly the way those are being handled being able to add for a trip and then drop it, I wonder if it is worth it for a company to even implement. If I join Tesla for a trip I save money after 108 kWh of charge, not sure how that would benefit Tesla except if I paid I would probably look at those first. The membership makes more sense to me from a company perspective if there was a minimum number of months to sign up for.
