Right, which has been launched as a RIVN spinoff. Assuming you can separate consumer perception is a dumb move.
McLaren's micromobility spinoff (Lavoie) bought VanMoof when the Amsterdam-based e-bike company went bankrupt last year. Since then McLaren has improved the VanMoof bikes, resumed production and sales. McLaren's F1 team won the constructors title for 2024 and have decisively won the first two races for 2025 so far. Who's worried about McLaren? no one. It can work. Not for any of us to fret over anyway, we don't run Rivian or Also.

At least we can be confident that if a Rivian spinoff does produce an e-Bike or scooter the battery won't burst in to flames while charging like the garbage Chinese brands.

Personally I hope it's an EV moped or similar. Travel to SE Asia or many urban parts of Europe and you'll see how big that market is. The removal of toxic, buzzy sounding exhaust fumes from the streets would be a great secondary benefit.

I, for one, would love to see a legitimate competitor to Future Motion's OneWheel. I know I'm just dreaming here but that's what I want to see!

Wasn't there talks of them making bikes a long time ago?
RJ has been interviewed several times over the years talking about last mile delivery etc, especially as more Door Dash/Uber Eats style food delivery has become more mainstream.

Purolator has a few cargo style 3 wheel bikes floating around Vancouver that handle smaller deliveries, a more bespoke Rivian solution would surely dominate, especially if, as he touched on, leveraging the vehicle side of things to bring costs down for consumers while still offering something compelling.

Rivian has designed cars which look at best look like geeky Minions and at worst look like hermaphrodites. They have big profitability and scalability challenges, really buggy software, service centers booking four months out, and totally unreliable cars.

Now they want to distract themselves with niche unprofitable markets. The board of directors needs to step in and set RJ straight. What other stupid skunkworks projects are still in flight at Rivian?

Rivian does not have the same pile of money that the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Bahrain has (McLaren's owner last year) or the Abu Dhabi government fund (current owner of McLaren). Noting for the record that UAE wealth fund has $1.4 Trillion and so can afford to engage in a little vanity project here and there.

It doesn't have nothing either. People who supposedly support Rivian need to give them a chance and not be sour pusses about everything they do before they even actually fail. This spin-off was literally just announced this AM and look at you all... already got yourselves bunched in a gordian knot.
