Rivian KUAT Piston SR Bike Rack Guide

I bought a Kuat for my road bike as soon as I took delivery of my R1T last year… was not a fan of the bike rack Rivian sold at the time, since you could only mount it to the roof (not enough room on the bed for the full wheel)
…and it didn’t cost $500

I’ve had a Kuat NV for almost 10 years and it’s been a great rack but beat up with heavy use and it blocks the backup camera on my new R1S. These Piston SRs look good. If I had an R1T I would use them for longer trips and just a tailgate pad for local riding.

I have some old Yakima roof bike racks that grab on to the front wheel and have a ratchet strap to hold the rear, which we’ve used occasionally (I prefer a hitch-mounted rack). The bikes are always going to flex back and forth with a roof or truck rail rack that puts the bikes up in the wind, though less so with a design like the Piston or 1up that locks onto both wheels (or has a TA/skewer lock for those who want to remove that wheel).

Unfortunately I tend to think the Piston or any other roof rack is too tall/less convenient for my SUV, and would involve probable range reduction and therefore only to be used in rare situations when I need to haul more bikes than I can fit on the hitch rack. I’m thinking I will need to get a 1up hitch rack to avoid blocking the rear camera when no bikes are loaded.

I purchased the Piston SR for my R1T this spring and I love it. Only thing besides the 1-Up that would hold my XL XC bike on the truck. Glad to see it is quasi-officially Rivian approved. Definitely hangs over the back though…

Good things the "pistons" have Kashima coat, wouldn't want too much stiction on the bike rack.

Actually the deal was gone when I decided to go with this model,but i called them up and they gave me the deal as a one time favor.
It works perfectly with the hitch adapter.

Can you open the tailgate without it hitting the rack? Also, are you using an extender or is it far enough away you can folk the rack up?

Yes. Still 2" space left.

Hmm, now I'm curious if the Kuat Piston Pro X hitch rack will work with the R1T since the design is different compared to my NV (mostly due to the plastic flare up from the front bike tire holder/mold).
