If a car can really drive itself safely, to the point that people can text, it’ll have a lot of value to a lot of people
What if the car can drive itself to a SC for a repair, arriving just before the techs are ready to work on it. Minimizing down time and wait time for repairs….

We have been abandoned for some time from an ADAS perspective. Don't expect any meaningful non-infotainment upgrades from here on out.
There is a clear difference in CPU capabilities between Gens 1&2. I wouldn’t expect much in the way of breakthroughs with Gen 1.

It wouldn't work that way....it would drive itself to the service center....where it would sit in the lot for a week or two....and then pull in the service bays when they are ready. Haha!

And a very important distinction: The L3 driving is limited to *below* 40 mph driving. That means a slow rush hour crawl will be handled by the car, but don’t even think about the car taking over at highway speeds.
Ironically, highway speeds are the easy case. FSD is at its most insane in local traffic <40mph.

Rivian is the minor league player among auto makers when it comes to not delivering on promises..

Anyone remember this now infamous 2020 promise from GM: "GM has committed to an additional $7 billion in funding for electric car and autonomous vehicle programs and will launch 30 new EV models globally through 2025, CEO Mary Barra announced today". Yeah... that one didn't age particularly well Mary, it's 2025

Toyota has been "a year, maybe 18 months away" from a production ready solid state battery for the last 10+ years now. That lie is getting tired now Toyota.

The undisputed champion liar is Tesla with their FSD being "in Beta" for how many years now? But they still gladly sell it to you as Full Self Drive when it's anything but that.
To be fair to Tesla now, but totally agree they did pull a lot of bullshit in taking people's ?, but FSD really does work now. I got the 3rd free trial since getting my M3 appliance and it is a perfect commuter. It has driven me 10 miles each way to work over the last 3 weeks with no interaction from me but inputting work on navigation. Pretty simple roads but has handled crossing 4 lanes of 55 mph traffic and several 4 way stops brilliantly. My wife says it drives smoother than me now ?.

I didn't think they would actually get there but the latest hardware cars are damn good. You of course have to pay attention just in case, which I realize a lot of our public likely won't do which will continue to result in bad results. I would rate it as a 15 year old driver as of October and now about 18 year old driver as of January. It is the only thing that keeps me just sorta interested in a CT but I love the rest of the features of my R1T too much. Give me hands free in my Gen1 on highways and I'll be super happy.

I don’t, seems like a lot of 15/16 year old drivers may be better, they are just starting out and don’t have that 2 years of experience where they think they are pros. ?

I agree though, give me hands free on open stretches of highways on my Gen 1 and I am content. I use it on trips, works well for me but would love hands free.

great now Rivian drivers will become as bad as Tesla drivers. I really don't like the concept of this stuff. You are driving, hands on the wheels and pay attention. If you don't want to drive take an uber.
My thoughts precisely. Not to mention the blame game when you inevitably get into an accident because you weren't paying attention.

Rivian HANDS FREE ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEM is coming 2025 + EYES OFF SYSTEM in 2026 -- Per CEO RJ SCARINGE

Source: RJ speaking at new San Francisco space opening

RJ says the gen 2 lightbar will change color when the car is driving autonomously, to let others know. Pretty good idea!

Interesting development! Wonder if this will cause Gen 1 owners to upgrade to Gen 2
My Teslas do not alert others in any way when FSD is enabled and everything has worked out just fine in that regard. Feature with lightbar seems gimmicky at best. Never a reason for me to upgrade my Gen 1. And how would all other drivers get the memo about the lightbar lights and meaning?
Or did you mean the other self-driving features, which would not make it down to Gen 1s thus requiring vehicle upgrade?

Can you explain how exactly a Tesla running on FSD makes a Tesla driver who is not himself driving by the way, well, a bad driver?
Tesla FSD is by far safer at driving than any human driver.
I myself do not use FSD much, but when I do, paying attention is all that I need to do, and my Teslas drive themselves end to end, on any road, in a way that is simply stunning and safer even with the current FSD level 2 status.

I encounter so many Tesla drivers who just are not paying attention, whether they are using FSD or not. Based on the evidence FSD is not better than a human driver, since they are known to hit cop cars and other emergency vehicles and are trained to behave like a human not follow the rules of the road (according to Tesla itself). Sorry but having to pay attention is a requirement for driving, otherwise you are a passenger so have someone else drive not the 'software'. it is a personal thing I don't trust any of the systems enough.

It's like people say BMW drivers don't use their turn signals..... Tesla drivers are the worst based on everything I have personally experienced.

It seems altogether clear to me that you do not understand how self-driving works. Not defending FSD by any means, but it is safer than human driving, full stop, whether one agrees with that or not is immaterial, N/A.
Deciding how good or bad FSD is solely on your personal impressions, opinions, and your own subjective and stereotypical perceptions of other drivers, well, that's not the way it works.
