Yep keep in mind that all cars have an emergency brake either cable operated or electrically with the parking brake switch. My Audi has one down by the shifter. EV's have a 4th safety like a diesel tractor (which doesn't have #3).
  1. Front master cylinder hydraulic/air loop.
  2. Rear master cylinder hydraulic/air loop.
  3. Cable or electric parking brake.
  4. Motor Regen or Engine brake.
I think in my case it was completely a software issue because the brake pedal was locked and couldn't be pressed. After the reset the brakes worked as normal.

During the software glitch the regen also stopped working. If you look at the screen shot, I'm coasting and zero regain. all battery and motor temps were good too. Interesting to see only the rear motors were engaged. Does this car regenerate in all 4, or just the fronts?

Would have been a good moment to see if the emergency brake works when he software is going through a glitch.

Please direct the rant directly to Rivian support. No one here can help you. Drive well.
I find them posting it here helpful! Of course they know this isn’t a forum full of Rivian execs…but they’re raising awareness over a potentially fatal issue that most of us should be aware of. The conversation that has ensued has also been insightful; I learned helpful info about the brakes and also that apparently the Park button doubles as an emergency brake (I need to research how that functions a little more). I’m perplexed why you and a few others feel the need to chime in and dismiss them.

Imagine a glitch in the cyber truck where the steering isn't mechanical. I wouldn't imagine that the hydraulic brakes could be blocked, but here we are with two cases of this occuring.

Thank you. We need to make sure these issues are brought to life to make sure these were just one offs... but I will tell you the connecting relationship between these two incidences is the battery. All the error lights come up after fast chargers and go away after a full restart...

Wow this topic has been helpful as a new R1s owner, I had no idea about the emergency parking brake option in the stem. It would be nice if they created a separate fixed forum entry of essential information about the Rivian. A place to read the most important information before you take your first spin. A collection of worst case scenarios and important hacks.
The emergency brake info is in your owners manual too.

That image shows power was being applied to the rear motors guessing that’s why no regen.

any updates on the underlying cause yet?
I go pick up on Monday but they did message that it was a solenoid, front end module, and a front cowl. Have no idea what this means so will have to wait to talk to them. But sounds it’s all electrical, which is somewhat concerning. I don’t know what the failure rate is, but couldn’t find any other like this one online. Did see others with brake failure, but don’t have the details to determine if they are the same.
