Apologies to my primitive cut and paste skill but her’s my take for the Rivian Brush bar and winch setup. It’s from my Land Rover LR3. Just curious to what you guys think.

Instant reaction? "Damn, that is ugly as hell, why did they make that???" I guess I just realized that the front end look of the Rivian is one thing I love. Makes for a hard decision between looks and function.

The only way to do this right is to make a completely new bumper. Otherwise it just doesn’t look right. One thing that does work on this copy/paste is that the center bull bar doesn’t try to surround the headlamps. Past designs that do that just made it look worse.

BTW, in the past I know we’ve seen OEM prototypes with a winch. Do we know if there is enough space behind the OEM bumper to put a winch or is that space occupied?

Are the brush bar and winch integral with each other?

Getting a brush bar option for the truck works for me but putting the winch in the front may be a pain with the wiring. Getting a winch is on my bucket list but was thinking of getting a hitch-mounted winch or winch+tray combo instead.

I got to laugh. Before getting the R1, my dream truck was a Unimog. Ungodly towing capacity (34k pounds IIRC). The newer ones have power take offs on the front and rear AND can switch the driving position from left hand drive to right hand drive with operating a few levers. Alas, top speed was 57 mph. Besides trail work, the only other thing I could do locally was park jets at the airport.

Not sure I would care for a brush bar but a front winch option YES!!

My guess is that based on our current numbers (Rivian drivers with interest in a brush bar / front winch) being significantly small is that no option will be available any time soon.

I envision a cradle/tray that could be setup using the tow hooks in the front although I am not sure if that is possible.

For now, a rear hitch winch option is in my plans.

It would be an interesting addition. I've had a winch on a 1996 Discovery and a 2016 Overland diesel. Not absolutely necessary but it was good insurance a few occasions.

My concern with the Rivian is that it would need a robust auxiliary 12 volt battery.

The problem with the usual winch placement is that it leaves nowhere for the license plate.

And some of us do live in places that actually enforce front license plate requirements. (My son has been pulled over for it, my mom has been pulled over for it three times (although twice were on the same road trip - a road trip in which her front plate was stolen!))

Now, if the winch was behind a flip-down license plate holder, sure.

On my 4Runner I just drilled/tapped my steel bumper for 1/4-20 threads such that the plate helped protect the winch line from dirt and debris while bolting from the bottom holes on the plate. There are definitely ways to handle front plates that aren't bad. I think the single biggest issue for the Rivian is going to be how to get power that's appropriate to the use without damaging the truck. Next to that, Rivian not freaking out and refusing to perform service because they consider it unsafe.
