Hello, newbie question again. Is there a setting I need to adjust? I went to charge at a Rivian Network charging station and they promote all over the place that it can get you 140 miles of range in 20 minutes and up to 200KwH. https://rivian.com/experience/charging I got not even close to that. It took about an hour to get 120 miles and was getting at most 77Kwh but was mostly around 59KwH.

What percent were you at when you started charging?

“Upto” is a max threshold not a guarantee or promise. Charging curve depends on many factors, like pack and ambient temperature, and if the charger is sharing power with another active charger. Using nav system to navigate to a charger will automatically trigger preconditioning and help improve charging curve/performance. DC charging curve will always taper/pull-back towards end of session; at any DCFC network.

Did you “condition” your battery on the way to the charging station? If you use the GPS and select the Rivian charging station to guide you there, it will “condition“ your battery on the way. I think it heats it up. I did this, and I got a blazing fast charge! Nothing like I’ve ever seen before. at one point it was charging it over 700 miles an hour! Yes, I said that correctly.

I think you've gotten the point that there's very little information to go off of here, but it's also important to note that every fast charger shares its load with multiple other chargers at each location.

You'll notice these chargers are listed as 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, and so on. All of the 1's share a 300kW feed, all of the 2's share a 300kW feed, etc. If 1A and 1B are in use, and those vehicles can charge at full capacity, they'll each get roughly 150kW. If you pull into 1C while this is happening, all three of you will get roughly 100kW. This will change when vehicles leave, or when their max charge rate decreases.

So, some questions for you:

1. Did you precondition? [If not, you'll experience lower performance]
2. Did you charge on a shared line? [If so, you'll experience much lower performance]
3. What was your SOC when you began your charge? [The higher your SOC the slower it charges]

Based on the charging power you saw, your battery was too cold. The charger needs to warm up too and will derate until it's warm enough. But I think that's 100kW. So in this case, it seems your battery was too cold too accept higher power.

As some other folks pointed out, my bet would be on the ambient temperature. How cold was it? Even after driving for an hour or two with cold outside temps the battery will not be warm enough. 50 kW is what I get if I don’t precondition assuming I’ve been driving for a while, and it will very slowly ramp up.

also, if your above 80% you will see slow speeds as well. Also, there is a charging curve so the maximum speeds will only happen at low state of charge speeds slows down as your state of charge increases. Significantly decreasing at 60% and continuing to do so at 70 & 80 as well.

Then, as others have pointed out, there are several scenarios where chargers can be failing to output their full capability as well in addition to them sharing cabinets at times of high demand the grid input can also be reduced.

I guess the temperature issue seems like a major one.

As I saw this post I am seeing 87kw rate at the Freeport RAN. I’m the only one here, and I preconditioned for the 18min drive here from Portland. But it’s 33F out, and I started with right around 20% SOC.

I just feel like my Tesla doesn’t experience as much slowdown in these temps at superchargers, but I’ll have to compare when we drive 1200 miles each way in our Y this Xmas break.

Also seeing slow charge rate at the San Antonio RAN today.

Navigated here by GPS. Ambient temp 70F. SoC ~35% at session start.

Plugged into charger 2 slots away from the only other Rivian charging.

Was charging at 130kW initially. Other Rivian an left. Charge rate dropped to 110kW at 50% SoC.

Not at all what one would expect from a 300kW max advertised rate.

The period of time that you can expect 200kw or over is very small. For the large pack it's from about 2% to 45%. After 45% it drops significantly. If you plugged in at 35% and weren't getting fast rates for the first 10% or so, it's likely one of the reasons listed above -- ambient temp, battery not at optimal temp, you were using a shared charger.

About the only time you can really expect to get the optimal speeds is on a road trip -- you've driven an hour or two so the battery is nice and warm and you're arriving at a low state of charge (10% or lower). When you plug in under these circumstances, you'll notice very fast rates initially before it tapers.

EDIT: You'll NEVER see the 300kw advertised rate. No Rivian can currently charge that fast. 220kw is the fastest possible. The 300kw is the max the stall can offer - potentially for a non-Rivian to take advantage of.

Thanks for those useful charts. Good to know what to expect.

FWIW, I did clearly state all of the charging conditions in my post that rule out issues like ambient temperature, battery not prepped, or shared charger.

Mine is a 2013 dual max.

Can someone explain to me what "70mph range added means"? Is this the vehicle stating the amount of miles added at a given charge time based on driving speed and conditions before arriving at the charger. 113 miles after 20 minutes doesn't seem all that impressive.

I find it is better on road trips to take more frequent charges than one long charge. This way you get to stretch your legs or use the restroom during a quick charge. Always navigate to the charger for preconditioning. If you show up at a charger and it is broken or all chargers are full it always better to show up with enough charge to make it to the next charger down the road just in case.
