I've used my NACS adapter a total of zero (0) times in the roughly ~6 months since it shipped to me.

100% correct and a lot of people seem to miss that second point -- I don't know a single Tesla owner who hasn't also purchased a CCS adapter (out of their own pockets) & the cost / need to buy the CCS adapter doesn't appear to have deterred Tesla sales (just as I would expect it to have no impact on Rivian sales).

Until charging infrastructure matures and becomes more standardized, we're all going to be carrying (and, in many cases, buying) adapters for the foreseeable future. If spending $200 on an adapter that sits in the frunk deters anyone from buying a Rivian (or any other EV for that matter), they probably weren't going to be happy in an EV long term anyways.
The free adapters may have been funded by NEVI or some other grant/byproduct of IRA. And unlike defense spending, most govt. grants aren't bottomless. I say that in jest. Even defense spending isn't completely bottomless. Either way, it's just not financially sustainable to provide free adapters forever. Someone had to pay for them.

Bad move imo. Probably cost the $40. Sell a car you can’t fill up. Wtf
Yeah, not really.

I had the A2Z before Rivian ever announced it was eligible to access the SC network, but I “filled up” at home or at CCS locations easily prior to then. Access to SC network is *in addition to* the CCS locations already available. It is an option, not the only solution.

Tom Moloughney made a fair point about Rivian sending the adapters out with only an opt-in from the owner but no cash payment on the line. There Is nothing wrong with Rivian charging a small amount—$20, $50, whatever—to ascribe value of the Tesla adapter to the owner. Since so many primarily fill up at home, there may not be a perceived need for using SC locations. If you check eBay, there are EV owners selling unused NACS adapters from Ford or Rivian, knowing there are others who are impatient to get their own.

Ford actually contracted with Lectron to make adapters for its customers because Tesla was so far behind in production of the SKU. Pretty sure GM has had to sub out for additional inventory of adapter. These companies are all spending money and it is well more than $40 per adapter to get their customers on the SC network.

Wut? not like Tesla Supercharge is the only place to "fill up". Dial down the drama. And even for those who have no alternative options, besides Supercharger, they can buy an adapter from Rivian, A2Z or Lectron. $225 shouldn't put anyone—who bought a $80k+ vehicle—in the poor house. The adapter was never advertised or implied as part of standard equipment and is not included in the bill of sale.

I always thought it was a mistake for Rivian to give away free adapters. If they are cash flow positive, then sure, fine. But they are not. They need to get cash flow positive as soon as possible and giving away free stuff is not the right way to do it.

Are you really saying that EVERY Tesla owner you know has purchased a CCS adapter? Wow, that is the exact opposite experience that I've had. I know many(dozens/hundreds?) of Tesla owners, and not a single one of them has acquired a CCS adapter. The Tesla supercharger network is everywhere, not sure why any Tesla owner would bother with an adapter.

But we don't know if they are truly giveaways out of their own pocket. If no grants are involved, they are at the very least a tax write-off.

It's all anecdotal. I have seen Teslas charging at CCS1 networks. Only means those particular owners have the adapter. Nothing else.

I did the CCS retrofit myself on my 2020 Model 3 (changed out the Charger ECU) and bought an adapter. It's come in handy about 2-3 times now especially on a last-leg charge in Missouri at an EA station where the superchargers were quite out of the way.

In addition to an R1T we also own a Model Y. We have a J1772 adapter and use it a lot (mainly for charging at home), but we have not purchased a CCS adapter and have no plan to). We tend to be more adventurous with the R1, so have a wider set of adapters.

Sure I get that anecdotally a random Tesla or two might have a CCS adapter, but @Southern R1S seemed to imply that EVERY tesla owner they know has one, which I think is way out of the norm.

I’ve owned Teslas since 2013 and have met many owners, very few of whom have a CCS adapter. I own one (3rd party, not Tesla) and used it once in Port Alberni (Vancouver Island, Canada) two years ago but this year when I was passing through while towing my trailer there was a new Supercharger station so I didn’t need it.

I’m sure there are thousands of Tesla owners in North America who own CCS adapters but there are many hundreds of thousands who likely do not.

I’m glad to see that Rivian will switch to building vehicles with the J3400 standard (NACS) because Tesla has the most extensive and reliable DC charging system and I believe that over time the ratio of J3400 to CCS will continually increase. I know there are EV owners who dislike Musk and won’t use Superchargers; I get that. Because of Musk’s recent descent into bizarre behavior and many bad business decisions I have no plans to purchase another Tesla. I have an R2 deposit.

Update: Rivian has confirmed to RivianTrackr that beginning January 14th, any new vehicle purchased will not include the NACS DC Adapter for free and must be purchased from the Gear Shop.

Was literally off to ask Rivian why they haven't sent my second NACS adapter yet, when I decided to check my order history instead of being an asshole. Lo' and behold, I have a shipment for my second NACS adapter order pending in my account.

The very interesting thing about this though, the image for this shipment is 404'ing, but the previous adapter shipment image shows up.... URL/part number is different. PROCFVDSQP vs PROCXX1HQ8 in the old one.
