Why go through the trouble to software lock the large. Inventory would move even more if it's not software limited and discounted. :)
And have a bunch of unhappy current owners who just paid higher prices, how did the Tesla owners take that news... or Hertz

Also it's not like they are only selling standard packs, they are still charging a premium for S+ and large packs. That is revenue that is lost if they just drop the price on a large pack.

That's life. If you're fighting for survival, you do whatever it takes. But what I'm getting at is there's nothing to unlock. If they want to move inventory, they will discount the large pack.

I'm saying if they did indeed software lock it, they now have the opportunity to unlock it if people pay money.

Who's on first.
If they don't do it now, then when?

Tesla still makes a profit on the software-locked smaller packs, and did everything in their power to discourage people from buying them in the first place. Rivian doesn’t make a profit on the Large pack at full large pack price - why would they sell it cheaper locked, and make the smaller pack *desirable*?
RJ quote from the earnings call: “
RJ Scaringe

Yeah, Mark, you referenced already, but I mean, the raw material costs within the battery supply chain have changed dramatically in the last year. Specifically, lithium hydroxide is down by about 4x from north of $80 a kilogram to just over $20 a kilogram today. So that has a very significant impact on our overall cost structure. But getting into just thinking about the overall supply chain sort of health for us and overall material cost, we're just seeing a dramatically different environment for sourcing than what we had previously.”

From a variable cost perspective, they make money on each vehicle. It’s the fixed costs that contribute to all the news that they are losing money on each vehicle. The reason they are losing money on each vehicle is because they aren’t selling enough for the profit of each vehicle sold to pay for the fixed costs of the business.

Because it’s the same pack with two fewer modules. Why go through the effort of the Max/Standard+ which is a completely different battery cells/chemistry, instead of just changing number of modules as was obviously the original plan? (Max was obviously supposed to be a couple extra modules in the extra space of the truck’s longer wheelbase, since max wasn’t originally supposed to be available on the SUV.
They originally floated the idea of putting the extra modules in the R1S but then not having a third row for the Max pack. Worked out for me (sort of) as I get both but screwed on the price. The extra range does allow me to do lots of trips without stopping. I didn't think it was going be worth it but it's all that was in the shop at the time.

Sounds like you got an actual large pack in there based on how much energy went in.

ICE only :(
Does Juicebox report the power it delivers or the power received by the battery? There are some losses between the charger and the pack. If 120kWh is pre-loss, and there's a 10% loss, that's 108kWh added to the pack. 108/.88 (battery % added), that's 122kWh for 0-100%. What's the "standard" pack size supposed to be in kWh? I think 122kWh would be closer to S+, with standard being lower.

The original idea was a larger pack with 3 additional 15kw modules. The R1S would had had to put them in the 3rd row footwell since it lacked the chasis length of the T.
