Rivian R1T R1S Rear-Ended Gen 2 R1S: $37,000 & 3 Months Later 1744930384357-qa

One of our Rivian vehicles in the Mars fleet was rear-ended back in January, and after a long repair journey, it’s finally back on the road. We’d like to share our experience for those who haven’t—and hopefully never will—go through something like this. But if you do, I hope this helps you feel a little more prepared for what to expect and what to do when it happens.

Our co-founder shared a detailed blog post about his experience. If you’re interested, you can read the full story [here].

Rivian is definitely one of the safest cars on the planet. Stay safe, and stay adventurous. We will soon get the Expedition Roof Rack on this Rivian :)

I love the two pictures and a video taken in the desert area in this blog.
Do you mind asking your co-founder the locations those were taken?

The drone footage was captured on “Gods Way Love Rd” near Joshua Tree, while the photos were taken at a private location in Lancaster, California!

Curious why you have to use your own insurance if you're not at fault?
It takes time for the other parties to settle with my provider. Once settled my provider will reimburse my deductible.

A few decades ago I was rear ended and started out dealing with the other guy’s insurance agency since they strightup admitted their guy was at fault.

They were slow, didn’t want to cover a rental, wanted me to take it to a body shop way way way far from me, and told me they “hoped” it would not exceed the max coverage on their guy’s policy. I rang my insurance they covered a rental, gave me a list of body shops many pretty close to where I was living. They also told me they didn’t care what the other companies limit was they would get the whole repair covered without it bumping my rates, the other party was responsible and they would get the other party to pay. If the other insurance company didn’t cover the whole bill, well the other guy should have bought better insurance.

It was basically 1000x easier to have my insurance company yell at their insurance company.

Two years ago our i3 got rear-ended, we went through our insurance and they subrogated the repair expenses to the at-fault's insurance. It's easier to go through your insurance because you're dealing with a sympathetic partner who's best interest is to keep you happy as a paying customer vs dealing with a combative/adversarial business entity who's only interest is to diminish your claim and delay paying the money they know the have to eventually pay out.

Similar happened to me several years back. Kid in a Chevy Sonic was too busy on his phone, plowed into the back of my X5 when all lanes came to a halt during rush hour. He claimed he didn't seem all 5 lanes coming to a stop or my bright white car. His insurance, GEICO, kept calling me, going around my insurance (State Farm) and pressuring me to sign release forms without reaching settlement. Repeating over and over that the kid was insured only up to a certain amount—as if that's any of my concern. State Farm had me proceed with repairs, me paying my deductible. The whole thing ended up taking almost two years to conclude. GEICO sucks.

^ funny you mentioned them, GEICO was the at-fault's insurer in our case too. They were very anxious to settle for the initial estimate which did not include hidden damage. Once hidden damage was found, the new estimate came in at over 3X the original estimate which explains why they were in such a hurry to settle in our case.

Worse than dealing with someone's else insurance that represents the at fault party is when the at fault party's insurance is the same as your own insurance carrier. They tried at first to total my MX offering me 50% of it's value - claiming it was a smaller battery than the name plate. (I had to provide my purchase agreement for them to back down). Then they refused to pay 100% to make me whole. Had to get my attorney involved before they paid 100% of the bill. Changed my agent as a result and reviewing other carriers with better claims performance.

Unfortunately they all suck when it comes to actually paying out vs passively raking it in! If you have a decent local agent who you've been using for years you can leverage that relationship because they don't want to lose a log time customer. If you only deal with the carrier directly, you better have lots of patients available, and record any phone calls if you make them.
