How difficult was it to remove this panel? My truck doesn't have this 12v and I'm wondering if the wiring still exists so I could add it back.

Very easy. You just need a plastic trim tool and 3 minutes. You pop off the side covers then pop off the lower trim.

You're definitely right. My process just had some unforeseen issues arise.

3 minutes in perfect conditions. Until your rearview mirror falls off and then call an audible.

Luckily it all went back together perfect and hopefully it is a stable connection that I never need to revisit (nor have a windshield replaced).

I got my Uniden r8 mounted perfectly and hard wired to the rear view mirror. Follows tips on this short YouTube using blend mount wire taps and some 3M Velcro (similar to big EZPass strips pictured below).

Annnnddd - I just found out I need a new windshield. For anyone that has done the mirror power tap, have they ran into problems with windshield replacements? I don't exactly love how all my wire-tap and extra wires worked out and I ended up having to splice the wires. Not nearly as clean as I would have liked.

Its compression clips, not magnetic.

Hello. Maybe it's because it's past bedtime, but I'm confused by notes written in the image. The detector requires a power lead and a ground. There is a note saying not to use yellow wire, but also a note indicating yellow wire as ground. Tap red for power, I get that. What do you do with ground lead for the detector cable?

Never mind. I see now the black arrow is actually pointing to a black wire (which isn't just something black in the backdrop. Definitely time for bed.

I tried pulling off the cover off the mirror base using a plastic pry bar with as much force as I was comfortable. It wouldn't budge probably because Rivian's application of glue seems to be very generous and not necessarily uniform :D

Thanks to those that posted their issues with the windshield and chunks coming off, I decided to do the technically more proper thing and went directly to the fuse box on the passenger side instead of the mirror or the 12v outlet under the dash. (I actually tried to go to the 12V outlet first, but it seemed easier to just go to the fuse box.)

I will post some pictures later this week after I move my fuse tap to a different fuse that shuts off, but I basically tapped into one of the mini fuses in the box and connected the ground to one of the mounting screws that was a good ground. I then ran the wire around the A pillar up to where the radar detector on the right side of the mirror. Running the wire was very fast using a plastic pry tool but thanks to lots of glue around where the speaker sits on the A-pillar, the wire sticks out a little right there.

I had all the tools and parts already, so it only took me about an hour for taking the panels off and installing the wiring.

Parts I used include:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08QJHXRN6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0003NN83U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I had to replace the crimp connection at the fuse tap because it wasn't matching for me, so you may optionally have to use the following:

@CO-rayman, could you let me know which fuses you attempted? Sounds like you tapped into an always-on one and will be moving to one that isn't.

You also mentioned that the fuse tap wasn't matching up. In another thread, folks mentioned that the fuses Rivian uses are non-standard automotive. For the kit you linked to on Amazon, did you replace the crimp connection with one of the three fork sizes they had available? Which one?

Thanks!

Meanwhile, going to follow up on the mirror tap. But for my purposes I want a USB-C end.

I was pointed to this, opting for dual ends to give me some optionality, hope the power source in that mirror can run 15w x2 if necessary:
DC 12V/24V to 5V 6A 30W Dual Type-C USB C Converter DC-DC Buck Charging Module Electric Step Down Power Adapter Compatible with Raspberry Pi 4, Cellphone, Car
https://a.co/d/jhFcUdn

Will need to add my own male crimp pins. I noticed for the radar detector cable products, most folks were using the smallest provided pin.

Wondering if any of these might fit the bill? Obviously can’t really tell what size they are from the photo though. But hopefully I can narrow down an end profile?

I am sorry I haven't gotten back to moving the fuse yet. Yes, I tapped into an always-on fuse and plan to move it to F25 TPMS mini fuse 5Amp (or F62 RTM or F63 RearView Mirror). See, attached pictures for locations.

I plan to use whichever gives me the best access.

And, yes the fuses used on mine are "mostly" standard mini fuses. Given Rivian's track record on changing things on the fly, I suggest you pull your panel off and see what you have installed.

I have included a picture of my current install. It basically takes a T25 to take off 4 screws to get to the fuse panel.

Hope I can get to this project next week and I will post more info once done.

Lastly, I plan to move the wire from the windshield side of the A-pillar to the door side after talking to a Rivian tech. The windshield side is not easily pry-able to hide the wire where the speaker is located and the Rivian tech suggested going on the other side and then fishing it through once I get to the roof liner.

Anyone also pulled the mirror while pulling the cap? This is what happened to me and I'm struggling to get the mirror re-installed. Any advice?
