Reading the full transcript at the Verge, it does sound like it won't take that long after R2 is out to launch R3X and then R3 - they just want to make sure production and delivery issues are addressed.

Looking promising! (depending on what wheel options are available I might hold out for the base R3 - don't need giant offroad tires)

Thanks for sharing. I have a R2 reservation but I wish they would come out with the R3X and R3 first. Also, you might get multiple tyre options.

Agreed. I have an R2 reservation but we are more interested in an R3 as we think the size difference between the R1 and the R3 will be more versatile for our needs and wants.

While I think It's great news (for some people) that the R3X is gonna be the first version of the R3 released, his exact words were "... we’re launching R2 first, allowing some time to get that stable, and then launching R3 ."

To me, 'some time to get stable' means once the Georgia plant is running, which puts the release of the R3 in roughly the same window that has already been discussed heavily, early to mid 2027.

I hope that it will be earlier, but the realistic part of me says to temper the hope. The wait is killing me, honestly.

Hmm... you reckon the R3X will be built in Normal, and not waiting for the Georgia plant? That could be interesting

If it has normal-ish tires I'll definitely try and get a test drive and depending on how much I can let my EV6 go for, switch early (unlikely apart from the test drive!)

Not trying to be rude, but that is exactly the opposite of what I said.

They want to get the R2 to a stable point before they launch the R3, and I think that means production of the R2 going through the Georgia plant. Then they will release the R3X after, most likely through the Georgia plant, as well.

Basically, I think the only new thing we learned about the R3 from that interview is that the R3X is launching before the base model, but we're still looking at a likely 2027 ship date.

thats assuming the R3/R3X would be built in Normal but i doubt that will happen. that would have to add another assembly line and i dont think they have the space. it will more than likely be built in Georgia, which means that plant needs to be built and up and running. they also have some commitments to the state with regards to jobs so i dont see it being built in Normal.

will the plant be done by 2027? its on pause now and i haven't heard that its restarted. plus i think the R2 needs to be a success. the reservation numbers are high but they need to convert those to sales and it needs to be a homerun. they can't commit all that capital to Georgia if the R2 is a fail. all that being said, its TBD on when we'll see the R3/R3X.

my gut tells me the R2 will be a hit. they will restart construction of the plant up in late 2025 and we'll hear about a 2027 release for the R3X 🤞🤞

R3 will be built in Georgia. That was clear from the investor day.
Georgia is going to take close to two years to build, validated and start production so they need to restart that within the next 12 months to hit a late 2027 production for R3. We will see.

Ah, sorry, misread that. I don't think R2 will start production in Georgia - there are production number breakdowns for how the Normal plant can split between R1, RDV and R2 - but yeah I don't think they will really add a fourth type there

From RJ himself in the interview

The second is a recognition that Normal is producing the R1 and the R2 platform and our commercial vehicle. Across each of those vehicles, if you sum it up, we have 65,000 units of commercial vehicle capacity, 85,000 units of R1 capacity, and we will have 155,000 units of R2 / R3 capacity. The beauty of that is those numbers sum up to more than the total capacity of the plant. Total capacity of the plant is 215,000 units a year, and it’s limited by the paint shop currently. It gives us a lot of fungibility between R1 versus R2. In a world in which there’s a lot of unknowns — the interest rate environment, because of that overall willingness or capability to spend on a vehicle in terms of monthly payment or total cost — it allows us, in the event interest rates are still high and customers are more price sensitive, to flex up on R2 and flex down on R1.

This might be interesting: in the Nilay Patel Decoder interview, around 36 mins in when Nilay asked RJ about the decision to postpone Georgia, he mentioned doing R2 / R3 in Normal. RJ didn't rebut it, and alternate between saying R2 and at least once saying R2/R3 (plus that Georgia will be the largest R2 plant once it's running)

We might not necessarily have to wait for Georgia if that's further delayed. RJ also said it doesn't matter which car we buy as long as it's a Rivian...

I guess we'll know for sure when reservations either open way before the Georgia plant is ready, or not.

The R2 and R3 share so much, they might just build them on the same line. VW does that I think. Smart to start with the r2 as costs need to go through a cycle because cutting costs from the R3 will be a challenge.

Indeed, RJ talked about them in the same terms as R1T compared to R1S

They could use the VW's Scout plant in S. Carolina to build R2s until their Georgia factory is set up...I would imagine.
