R2 vs Lyriq

We currently have a Cadillac Lyriq and our lease will be up next year hopefully in time for our R2 reservation. The problem is the Lyriq is a little small for our family. For those that maybe have seen both in person does the R2 seem a little larger in the cargo area?

I know the R1S is maybe a better option but not interested in the price point too expensive at 90k with the max dual. Was hoping for maybe a dual max R2 around 50-60k.

I know details are vague at this time just curious for those that maybe have seen both vehicles.

I've seen the R2 in person, and it's about the same size overall as the Lyric, but the cargo area is square instead of sloped. Those rear ends that slope and narrow in the cargo area, like the Lyric, substantially reduce the cargo volume. I won't be following up with getting an R2 because I prefer a larger vehicle, and the R2 cargo area was a bit small for the crate and two large dogs.

If the Lyric is just a little bit small, you'll be good with an R2. If it's significantly too small, the R2 won't be enough.

According to US News & World Report:

“The Lyriq has average cargo room for a luxury electric SUV. The Cadillac provides 28 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 60.8 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Despite the cargo area's narrow opening, the deep well means there's plenty of room for skis, golf clubs and other lengthy items. A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free power liftgate is available.”

Car and Driver says:

“The R2 is sized similarly to compact crossovers such as the BMW X3 and the Hyundai Tucson…”

and

“Two rows of seats accommodate up to five riders with a generously sized rear cargo area and a frunk for extra storage.”

Car and Driver also says the BMW X3 has about 31.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 67.1 cubic feet with the second row folded down. It’s also a boxier SUV with a wide opening, so I would speculate the R2 is similar in dimensions to that.

The R2’s front seats are not going to fold forward anymore. I don’t think it passed safety regulations in the US. Just my opinion.

The other thing to keep in mind is if you don't plan to have more kids you'll most likely be taking less stuff as your child grows so an R2 might be fine.

Thanks! Just measured the Lyriq and it's only a few inches shorter both width and depth. It might work...will have to just look at it in person since it is boxier. I would love to get the Rivian vs something like a Vistiq or Ioniq 9.
I think they have an R2 at the Rivian Space in Austin but would need to confirm, you're in San Antonio no?? What is that, about an hour and half away?

I can tell you with absolute certainty the cargo area is square and completely usable.

If you want a feel the R2 it is pretty close to the Jeep Grand Cherokee in rear space. You could take a look at one of those.

I LOVED the build quality of the 2024 Lyriq I owned—but the software/tech was trash. That’s why I sold it and upgraded to 2025 R1S. The 2025 Lyriq supposedly fixed many of those issues, but there’s lots of tech glitches reported in the lyric that are not in other GM vehicles. We have a Yukon Xcel Denali, and the tech works flawlessly there. And it’s a 2022. For now if you’re considering I would recommend the Rivian because the company really understands the tech and it continuously upgrades in a way that I did notexperience with the

I had a 2024 Lyriq, and the build quality was amazing IMO. The software is where it sucked. GM had issues--no idea how to fix it. It never parallel parked itself. The adaptive cruise would cut off randomly. I loved it, but GM had no real idea about the software system. Shame since it was otherwise a great vehicle. I sold it and purchased a 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Max, and I can say it's worth the money to me. I've but 2500 miles on it in 2 months--no issues. Some glitches here and there, but a soft or hard reset has fixed them all. I had the radio 'tuner' that had to be replaced when I bought it, and Rivian came to my house--90 miles away from the closest repair center--and fixed it on the spot within 2 weeks. Rivian just understands their software much better. I hear 2025 Lyriqs had some of the issues fixed, but the OTA updates on the Lyriq were problematic and only seemed to 'fix' bugs--never for huge system updates like Rivian gives. Now my R1S does great for the hands free driving--used it for 100 miles or so already. I'd highly recommend.

So it was documented by way of that rep, that it's 44" wide x 40" deep, does anything have a height measurement? Obviously, there's an opening height that's a little different from the height past that point.

we have 2 kids, and I can confirm that the Lyriq back seat is slightly more spacious..I think like 39" of rear seat leg room vs R1S at 36.5". The car seats in the Lyriq had slightly more space than we have in the R1S, though the rear storage is much better in the R1S. The Lyriq wasn't bad for space usage in a real world scenario honestly.
