Are you writing about the R2
His post stated “production R2”.

That decision by Rivian is clearly the right move because it makes using the Tesla Supercharger network much easier.

It is unfortunate that Rivian decided to put the charge port in the front on the R1 models. But I don’t expect them to change that now. It made it impossible to use V1 Superchargers because the cables are not long enough even when the R1 is parked nose in. So those Superchargers are not available to Rivian.

Perfect location for me. Makes it completely compatible with my Tesla and the charger mounted in my garage. The R2 will replace my M3 when it arrives.

I am shocked that anyone who tows would think that any rear charging port is "the right move?" Anything other than front location complicates towing. Anything other than passenger side (or front, in the case of slanted parking) makes streetside charging more difficult or impossible. Tesla will probably add accommodations (longer cables, or more space, etc.) at many Superchargers, but pull-through charging slots are harder to arrange than a longer cable, or more space between chargers.

Big hooray from me. I hate the front charge port when most charging spaces are at a 90 deg. angle from the approach and usually spaces either side are occupied.

Reverse parking is the way forward. Keep some 'pull through/pull alongside' slots for folks with trailers.

Driver rear is an excellent location for Tesla supercharger compatibility however its not a good location for folks that tow.

The long term solution lies with the location and orientation of the charging equipment. There are many vehicles out there with different charging port locations.

It would be nice to see an optional 2nd charging port for those who like to tow. The front charging ports are ideal for towing since you don't have to unhook the trailer to get a charge. Pull through sites solve this issue but those are far and few between. Very few operators actually have pull through. Most are pull up which means you need a front charge port if your towing.
Totally agree, but best to get the R1T for that anyhow.

meh. long term is doesnt really matter because v4 SC will have longer cables to be better compatible with non-Teslas. and i thought the reason it was on the passenger side rear was to accommodate future curb side chargers and to be compatible with existing RAN chargers.

so you want to be more compatible with a 3rd party charger and less with your own?

Agree - to be sure, the real long term solution is we need better charging infrastructure that allows for pull-thru charging similar to Gas Station pump islands today.

I pull a 26 foot travel trailer and even though I could technically pull forward into a regular parking stall and charge with the trailer in tow, it means I'm either parking sideways and taking up a significant number of spots to the left of the charging station (if they're available) or blocking the driving lane or worse, other charging stations.

The infrastructure is slowly getting better, but long haul towing trips still generate stress and anxiety that I'd rather not have.

All of the RAN charging stations I've encountered here on the East Coast have been regular pull forward parking stalls with one set aside as a pull-through for trailers. They would all continue to work with the proposed change.

Better than where it is now but still not ideal. They had to compromise with existing R1 owners. The ideal place is passenger front. Tesla, towing, and streets side compatibility.
How is it street side compatible? The passenger side is curbside in parallel parking.

It doesn't matter anymore than which side (front or back) the gas tank filler is located on an ICE vehicle.

Some work better than others in different places and over time chargers will be retrofitted in the middle of island just like gas stations. Already some like that a truck stops.

Good move for R2, charge port on the driver side of the vehicle makes it more accessible for home charging.

I feel for the towing use case people. Might just be that the R1 platform has to be the recommended option for people who need to tow regularly.

I agree passenger front would have been a better location. Still compatible with Tesla chargers if you park facing forward, but better for people like me who mounted their charger at the end of the garage and don't back into the garage. It's not a huge deal though, the Rivian charger has a 24' cable so it should be able to reach the charge port wherever it is.
