We see the R2 and R3X at roadshows. Where is the R3 from the Spring launch event?

both of these need to be in customer’s driveways ASAP and not in public displays If Rivian is to survive.
Fair point on the urgency.

I would add that right now Rivian needs to get ready for R2. They need to also build their service network because the mass market will not accept multi-month waits for service appointments.

The service needs to be ready and once that’s in place, the manufacturing needs to start and R3 will follow.

R3 will probably take longer especially if it’s a lower margin vehicle.

Recall that it took Tesla several years to roll out the less expensive Model Y and Model 3. Rivian is roughly in the same state as was Tesla back in 2018. But, Rivian has shown itself to have better management and better engineers and to be quicker on its feet. Patience everyone. Rivian is moving faster that Tesla ever did. Time passes quickly and the R2 and R3 series will be here before you know it. Drive well.

As a long-time Tesla owner and follower I've gotten very, very used to taking any timeline from Tesla / Elon with an entire ocean's full of salt. They seem to absolutely adore setting timeframes and then blowing right past them - sometimes repeatedly.

I've been approaching R2 availability with this same skepticism and said as much during a conversation I had with one of the Rivian designers at the Nashville event. For what it's worth, the designer seemed pretty adamant that Rivian would make the 2026 launch date. He made a comment that this was a common theme heard from Tesla owners and that it was something that Rivian was working hard to overcome - e.g., that Rivian isn't Tesla and keeps its promises.

(The context for this came when I asked a question about how much the final, shipping version would change from this hand-built prototype given that they were taking great pride in pointing out seemingly minor, but cool, design elements. As reported in many other threads, he said this prototype was "production intent" and was, with a few mods like swapping the location of the NACS port, what Rivian intends to build. Again, after seeing years of seeing car companies trot out concept car prototypes that end up bearing scant little resemblance to what actually, if ever, ends up shipping, that was great to hear.)

Of course, the proof will be in the pudding. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but if 2026 comes and goes without R2 shipping in some reasonable quantity they'll have to work hard to regain lost trust.

I stopped in Friday. I think they were only in Boston until yesterday. The R3X was clearly the star. I have a first edition R1S, and I would swap in a heartbeat.

that said, Rivian also had one of the software engineers on hand too. He was asking about issues, what I thought of the Halloween update, helped potentially solve a couple issues I’ve had. Really insightful interaction. He even gave me a new term, “Wheel block”. Means you can’t see the drivers screen because of the steering wheel. Looks like they addressed in both the R2 and R3 with larger open space on the steering wheel. He mentioned, though it’s already well know that they are full sped on R2 release and R3 is next up. Given R2 is 2026, I assume R3 might be 2027+.

I too saw these at Boston this weekend. The R2 is incredibly impressive and will have buyers lined up as soon as they get it out. I really hope, and believe, that they will meet their target.

I was there on Thursday. The R2 and R3X were cool, but I really enjoyed talking for an hour total with a senior interior designer of R1/2 and a software interface engineer. Very interesting discussions.

As someone mentioned above, these display cars (at least the R2) are locked-in designs. I mentioned a relatively minor feature request from personal experience - adding a pop-out cupholder tray to the back as well as the front of the center console, because there are no rear cupholders when all three second row seats are occupied (by a child and two belted dogs, in my recent example). Tesla Model X has this. He liked it and said he would put it on the consideration list for a future revision because the R2 design is fixed and they are already working on manufacturing planning. That was reassuring to hear.

I also gave him some feedback on the useless phone charging pad in the R1, showing him the website for what I replaced it with, the Adventure High Tech StowNCharge that I’m very happy with despite the high price. He was very interested and took down the name.

I should have given some feedback on the R1S third row access, which is to me a weak point. The button press to access works fine, but it’s an overly involved process to wrestle the seat back into position.

An interesting comment from the SW guy was that the R3X will be priced higher than the R2, which I guess makes sense. I also learned that he was part of the proof of concept project to rewire an Audi e-tron with Rivian ECUs, wiring and control software that led to the VW-Rivian joint venture. The team was hidden in the back of an unmarked warehouse with two cars, one they worked on and the other they kept as-is for reference. Cool stuff. https://www.reuters.com/business/au...w-vws-5-bln-rivian-bet-transpired-2024-06-27/

The main takeaway I got from them was that they’re really excited about what they’re doing at Rivian, and they are eager for customer feedback. They said they are monitoring this and other forums to collect feedback.
