Chances are you will freeze to death in ice car too. I mean why you want to go all alone on adventure trip which looks shady and scary already. I will never go alone on those kind of trips. I will go in group and prepared for worse.
Most disasters require multiple failures occurring at the same time. Taking one car could be considered a failure, yes. Adventurers who take more than one car are at less risk, even though sometimes that is not possible. Or the weather looks great for only one car and then turns nasty unpredictably.

However, an ICE car will let me open the door with a manual key in case of 12V failure and a Rivian will not. With the Rivian I am one step closer to disaster, or at least a major problem.

Seriously! Monday 12/30 was the busiest day in Bachelor history.

I carry a jumper with me and am pretty confident I can get things running if there was another failure. 5th electric car here so almost expect 12v issues at this point. Also need to be confident I can fix things when in remote areas.

Yes. Same approach I took. Youā€™ll need an adapter from the Rivian 50A RV style plug to the 30A generator/dryer cable. Also consider that many newer construction houses will have a grounded 4 prong 30A receptacle which will require another adapter. Both can be purchased on Amazon. (Links below)

Itā€™s worth noting that the 30A generator extension cable is rated for only up to 30 amps at 240v which limits you to drawing roughly 7kw. (30A*240V=7200w) this is slightly less than you would get on a typical home charger but it does the job of topping things off overnight just fine.

The truck seemed to know this was the case (Iā€™m not sure how) and limited the speed to 7kw. If you want to be super safe you can manually bring this down to 5 or 6kw in the charging screen. Minimally check this as this is a lot of power and last thing you want is a fire.

If for whatever reason you create this cable adapter from Home Depot parts be sure to use the 2 hot wires (black and red) and the neutral (white) do not run neutral over the ground wire (green).

links to what I used:

Make sure these use real pure copper (not aluminum) and donā€™t go more than 30ā€™ as resistance (and subsequent heat) are proportional to length (oversimplified).

In no way am I recommending this or indicating that this is an approved way to charge. Use at your own risk! :)
Cool trip report, and thanks for sharing the links, was looking for a similar setup. Did you have issues with the CircleCord extension not accepting the 14-50 male end all the way (šŸ˜) like some of the reviewers?

At first glance the Rivian adapter looks like it will fit a 30A dryer receptacle but these are slightly different. The Rivian is a 50A RV type so you need to ensure you get the right adapter. The links I provided in a reply somewhere in this thread has them.

I guess itā€™s the 14-50 to 10-30 adapter that would need to fit in any event. I thought you were saying you had used all of these adapters and the extension cord on your trip so was asking if it all worked for you, and not leaving a bunch of metal exposed like the reviews here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B08XBQ8GHY/R1ITIG4ZW095M3

Door not openingā€¦I am worried about that too. Especially with my elderly parents in back. Is not able to open the door only your concern, how about vehicle catching fire. There are many other factor which can go wrong with any vehicle EV or Non EV. My brother in law was T-Boned in his Chevy Silverado in 2012. He was not able to open the doors because they were stuck after impact. Well this is not an EV, now what. So itā€™s just unfortunate incident which is just waiting to happen, which you can never prepare for.

Am I reading correctly that you pulled 30 amps continuously on a 30 amp outlet? Not sure if anyone else mentioned it already but we should only pull 80% of the rated max when we charge, so 24 amps on a 30amp outlet. Just wanted to call that out. Nice write-up!

follow up:

mobile service completed battery replacement and replaced both tailgate latch assemblies. It took him about 2 hours to complete this service with removing and re-installing my soft bed cover

The tech noted there was no difference in the battery that was replaced. Itā€™s just another lead acid battery.

They also noted that there didnā€™t appear to be anything physically wrong with the old latches and that there may be a firmware mismatch with a software update that is causing the erratic behavior. The replacements seem to be working so far.

They showed me the emergency access process for popping the hood by removing the 6 T-20 screws from the front of the driver side wheel well cover and reaching in to pull the emergency release. Iā€™m going to figure out a way to carry a T-20 as my ā€œemergency keyā€ and keep my jumper in the frunk.

He also indicated that they were ramping up more mobile service to deal with non critical services to help ease the service center load. Hope this helps!
