Took a trip in my R1T to southeastern Oregon. Both a charging desert and an actual desert involved.

Getting there:

Left Sandy OR with 93% SOC and drove straight through to the EA station at Walmart in Bend OR. I arrived with ~29% SOC and charged to 83% SOC in 38 min. Top speed of 210kW.
From here I headed east to a Chargepoint station in Burns, OR.. So warning here this station was painfully slow, itā€˜s supposed to be 62.5kW but would only do half of that, so I charged for nearly 2 hours and 15 min.

Night 1: Posted up on some BLM land NW of Burns and quickly setup the RTT in the dark. Survived the night in the tent with a thunderstorm but slept through most of it and then coated the truck with a thick layer of mud getting back to Burns.. So there is a car wash in Burns/Hines but requires quarters and the changed machine wasnā€™t workingā€¦ so a muddy truck would be the norm for the rest of this trip.

Day 2: Heading back to Burns to top off (another hour of charging, same 31kW rate) before heading south to Frenchglen, OR. I booked two nights at Steens Mountain Wilderness resort. Specifically I booked a RV spot with a Nema 14-50 plug. After confirming my charging situation and relaxing a bit I went and explored the Steens Mountain loop road. It wasnā€™t open all the way but was able to drive miles up the gravel roads to some amazing views.

Day 3: Headed south around the Steens Mountains and explored the Alvord Desert, the mud was thick here in places too. In fact at one point I almost drove straight into a mud bit/pond that would have surely swallowed the truck but hit the brakes just in time and was able to navigate around. In total close to 27 miles overlanding through the desert.

Day 4: Overlanding adventure and then return home. After charging fully to 100% I headed due west from Frenchglen overland. I spent the next 5 hours traversing the wilderness with mountains, canyons, cows and more for a 93 mile traverse to 395. This part was awesome but the less awesome part is I emerged on 395 with a range ~10 miles short of what I needed to get back to Bend. As a result I had to back track 30 min each way to charge in Burns again. So 1hr22min later I had enough juice to make it back to Bend (35 min of charging on a 150kW EA stall, 167kW max) to finish charging and head home to Sandy. Long day but made it home just before midnight after a quick stop in Madras to rinse off the mud.

Thank you for the write up! Great views!

Having to live vicariously until I can do some practice runs with mine. Curious as to what tool you used to plot your trips. I just got an Garmin InReach for father's Day that can plat trips but still learning it....

Gaia GPS is what I am using. Easy to download offline maps and record tracks for multiple activities. I am just starting to use Gaia recently but so far I am happy with it.

Thanks for this write up - have this almost exact trip in my planner - including the stay at the RV Resort. Glad they were open to letting you book an RV spot to charge etc.

Yeah not a bad deal for $50/night including hot showers and the ~100kWh of juice I used each day.

Hope they get that charger in Burns up to speed, would have saved me a couple hours of charging time.

Just thought of a couple of questions: How much range did you have when you hit 395? You said 10 miles short of Bend so I assume about 100 miles or so?

For that leg from Frenchglen to 395, what driving modes were you in?

I was mostly in Off road auto with high ride setting. I spent a short bit of time in rock crawl/highest.

When I hit 395 I had about 120 miles of conserve range and the charge in Bend was ~130miles. That translated to 100 miles of range and 108 miles to EA in Bend when I reached 20. I almost risked it but decided against it.

Keep in mind there was a whole lot of different forest/pasture roads through that stretch of BLM land so a different route may be possible. Hit me up if you want a GPX track for my route.

I mean unless you enjoy spending hours 'fast' charging. Also I didn't mention it but at night it didn't feel terribly safe, very dark and the only person around was the homeless guy and his dog.

That's impressive. Is that the theoretical max? How long did the charge sustain at the rate?
I've seen higher, up to 219kW. In my experience it doesn't stay above 200kW too long.

Thanks for the write up. Have been wondering about the charger in Burns, OR as that route is our normal drive when traveling to Boise(non EV). Hope the state will start to build out more chargers in eastern Oregon, specifically on Rt 20.

Placing a Rivian Adventure Network station in Burns would be great. That would open up the door to playing off the beaten path around there, as well allowing safer crossings of the State.

+1 on Gaia GPS. It has been my go-to backpacking app for years. I plug the route into my iPhone and download the offline maps, put it on Airplane mode and it does great in the backcountry. I find it a much better and more reliable solution than any of the Garmin stuff I used to use.
