I'm nearing 3 years and almost at 60k miles, so I feel your frustration, but my subframe problem was identified early enough and (knock on my noggin) I've only had tailgate issues since.

Since you have a battery/drivetrain issue, it's covered for even longer. You've got 5 more years and 125k miles to go! I recommend keeping it.

Just because someone has warranty left doesn’t mean they trust the vehicle (or service). If it has warranty and breaks, it’s still broken, and can become a project, given Rivians service times. Best case is it breaks in your driveway (if it breaks). Worst case, it breaks on the road, with passengers, as happened to the OP, in the winter, in near freezing temperatures.

I never said blindly trust Rivian, I addressed the warranty concern. This specific instance is covered beyond the 60k miles warranty referenced in "before the 50k [sic] and I lost the warranty".

My service center has been working on my problem for 2 days and I should get it back today. They believe it is an error triggered by unplugging the Tesla charger before ending the charging session by the phone app. I’m heading out on a Michigan to Florida road trip on Sunday and will be using the Tesla network for most of my charging.

They are supposed to switch out a second HV wiring harness today (if it arrives as expected) on mine that they think may have been damaged in the earlier repairs. Hopefully that will do the trick. 32 days and counting….

39 days and counting. I keep hearing that the next thing should fix it and that it’ll be done by tomorrow. I then have to track someone down 3-4 days later only to be told it is actually the next thing after the last one that will actually fix it.

At this point I’d consider asking for a bust back. How confident are you really in their quality of work even if you get your truck back?

After three days of radio silence, I just called the service manager. The new wiring harness did not fix the problem. They now have senior engineering taking a look at the vehicle. He has no timeframe or when it will be ready, although he did say that this was an extremely abnormal Issue that the truck is having. I would love to get any feedback from anyone who has dealt with something like this. Please chime in if you’ve had a similar experience as my level of concern continues to rise with every unsuccessful attempt at fixing the problem.

First off I’m really sorry that you and your kids experience this. It’s a very frustrating and anxiety provoking ordeal that you went through. I also understand your frustration surrounding the warranty and them not being able to figure out what’s going on with the truck currently.

I do think Rivian will get to the bottom of this for you and ultimately repair the vehicle. Because the GEN two is still relatively new…. it does sometimes take Rivian a bit longer to get a problem like this sorted. Sometimes a lot of the waiting is waiting on parts.

I don’t blame you one bit if you don’t trust the vehicle at this point. As someone else pointed out though you do have one of the best warranties in the industry on the battery and electric drive components. If they still can’t get things figured out with your truck, he might want to look into lemon law or ask them to replace the vehicle.

The two things that concern me about this experience are the amount of parts that have been swapped on your new vehicle and the fact that they still can’t give you any answers as to what the problem is. I know here in Maryland. You have to send a last chance letter and the manufacturer has 30 days once you send that letter to resolve it or it becomes a lemon.

rivian is usually pretty good about making things right though, and I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that.
There is usually a time limit to make a lemon law claim (typically 1st year if ownership). I don’t think any state lets you make a lemon law claim after 3 years of ownership….

As another customer experienced, Rivian provided poor advice that created a worse situation. Think the sage advice going forward for customers in similar situations is to stay put at the charger and let Rivian tow it to the closest service center before driving away from a safer location.

Hope Rivian makes it right, and right quick. ?

In Cali you can up to four years I believe.

Just read the linked story. Sounds very similar to my experience. I’d feel better about things if it seemed like they had any area what is actually wrong after having it in house for over 5 weeks.

Your correct. I misreads his original post.

@emaximus if it were mine I would give them at least 45 days. No state lemon law but the federal lemon law known as magnuson moss warranty act may apply here. I’m not an attorney, but any experienced lemon law attorney should be able to give you some advice on your options.

My understanding is that the federal law allows for compensation but not necessarily full purchase price or replacement of vehicle.

I do think Rivian will ultimately resolve this for you but since it’s a unique situation where they need to get engineering involved it sounds like it’s causing a lot of delays in diagnosis & repair.

I talked with the manager of the SC last Friday and again today. After getting senior engineering involved, they finally decided to replace the high voltage battery. They installed a battery that Rivian refurbished today. The battery they installed supposed only shows 1% degradation which has to be better in theory from the one I’d driven on for 38k miles. Tomorrow the plan is to aggressively road test it to make sure all is functioning normally. After that, I’m told I can possibly get my R1T back. This has been quite the long road after it died in the middle of nowhere on a bridge at night on January 26th. Hopefully, it does well tomorrow and this all becomes a distant memory. Fingers crossed. I’m still not sure I’ll ever feel as comfortable as I did driving it for the first 38k, but time will tell. If not, I won’t be keeping it past the warranty expiration. I’d have to sell a kidney to pay for everything they’ve done to it if it wasn’t under warranty.

^ I'm guessing you'd be in the neighborhood of $30K or so by now if it was out of warranty o_O

Hope the new batt is the solution that gets you your truck back!!
