The IIHS has posted its 2024 Top Safety Picks / crash test results and for the 3rd straight year, the R1T earned the IIHS Top Safety+ Rating! ?

You can see on the list that no other pickup (ICE, Hybrid or EV) received the Top Safety+ award!

Rivian R1T R1S R1T awarded the 2024 IIHS Top Safety+ Rating ? Only Pickup Truck to earn this award! rivian r1t top safety+ rating pick

All pickups are giant Turd Ferguson when it comes to safety...I'd argue it's a pretty low bar for Rivian.

Safety has a few components: test ratings, height, weight, braking, acceleration, handling and crash avoidance software. Except for the avoidance software, Rivian is easily one of the safest vehicles on the road. I don't know enough to say how avoidance software compares with other vehicles - not just EVs

While I am glad the R1T performs well... You can also see that the + could be taken away (as they did for the S) because of the seatbelt reminders (which for some reason arent graded on the T?).

I only say this because it could mean that the T looses the Pick+ down the road.
If you look even closer, the Toyota Tundra Crew is graded on the seat belt reminders...

I feel very safe in my S, and if I do get into an accident, I know myself, my wife, and my 2 kids, will survive!

Top Safety+ Rating is impressive regardless of how crappy other pickups might be when it comes to safety. Of all vehicles on the market, only 30 earned Top Safety+

Yes TSP+ is not graded on a curve. (n.b. not every vehicle is tested.)

Large Pickups - Only the R1t
Small Pickups - none
Minivans - none
Large SUVs - none (R1S is a TSP not TSP+)
Midsized Luxury SUVs - 8 total, Model Y is only electric
Midsized SUVs - 7 total, no EVs
Small SUV - 7 total, Ioniq and GV60 only EVs
Large luxury cars - 3 total, 1 EV - G80
Large Cars - none
Mid-sized Luxury Cars - none
Mid-sized Cars - 2 total, 1 EV - Ioniq 6
Small Cars - 4 total, no EVs

More importantly, the R1T truck is Ruck approved.

I’m grateful for no seatbelt reminders. I’m a grown ass adult; I don’t need a minder, nor a nannie. If the belt’s off, trust me I know. Uncommon opinion perhaps but there it is.

Safety is on the top of our list for choosing a family tank, which leads to EVs being a natural selection as the low center of gravity helps in all kinds of ways.

Tesla Model X being the overall champ and Rivian coming in very strong. Sure there are some other ICE vehicles that get Top Pick+ Ratings, which is great like the BMW, Genesis, Benz SUVs etc... I'm just glad that Rivian comes out strong in the areas that matter to us.

Something like a seat belt reminder shouldn't be considered in my opinion and should remain it a different category vs actual physical safety of the passengers.

Having physical mass in a people hauler is good, but it doesn't always paint the full picture and is often deceiving. For example, most Ford & toy-ota trucks are utter crap for structural integrity. If you look at the crash tests it speaks volume. A bigger vehicle doesn't always mean better.

I'm with you 100% and I'm sure there are a lot who hold this opinion. Seat belt reminders? Complete B.S. That should NOT be counted toward the physical (impact) safety aspect.

All I care is how safe the car is in the areas that actually matters to me.

If one forgets to put on their seat belt, they've got bigger problems. To forget something habitual like that is like forgetting to press the brakes to stop. It goes against common logic. A driver doesn't go "oh yea I need to press the brakes or press the pedal to accelerate." Duhhh?

IIHS really needs to rework their rating system.

Look closely: that’s a 2nd gen Tundra access cab (or whatever they called the one with the handle cutout/indent in the C pillar).

Crazy video, though. I’d be really interested to see how glass roof vehicles fair in that test.

With the structural changes I wonder if the 2025 models perform differently.

Ah good catch. I'll rephrase to include crap toy-ota in there too then. Do note that the current Ford F-150 trucks still are poor in the front overlap and rear safety categories. (Areas that actually matter.)

I've been curious about this as well, especially with the cost cutting on the 2025 models. Were any of the structural areas touched I wonder in the name of cost cutting? The 2nd gen doors do feel lighter and tinny compare to the Gen 1s. I've noticed this myself.

*safest for the vehicle occupants. Not so much for pedestrians and bicyclists, although that's not specific to Rivian...
