Do this now. Place your R1S on a 5 degree (or more) decline and see if your liftgate opens all the way or partially opens and then closes? I've attached a photo and video link of the action.
Background: Initially I requested mobile service for this issue. They were unable to fix it and set up a main service center appointment.
They were unable to fix it at the main service center. The lead technician told me that they are aware of this problem, but that there are no tolerance limits in any of their manuals. Everything works fine when the SUV is on level ground and this is how they sign off on "fixing" the issue.
He told me a previous customer came in with the same issue and they replaced all the actuators, but that still did not fix the problem. This is an off road vehicle and not all terrain is going to be straight and level! The technician agreed.
the technician said that Rivian needs more data so that they can send the data back to the engineers for a fix. Therefore I'm asking all R1S owners to see if they have this issue and request a mobile service request, if able, so they can start getting enough negative feedback to fix this issue. I've had this issue happen as low as a 3 degree decline angle.
If you've had a similar issue, I'd like to know what you were told?

You must not have had a hand full of groceries:CWL:
Mine happens all the time at a slight angle. Frustrating when you have your hands full.

Do I want to ask what you're using to hit the button in the first place? I'm guessing no.

I have this problem as well. My driveway slopes away from the house, and i have to manually open the liftgate when the vehicle is pointing downhill. Thought it was odd that Rivian had such a wimpy actuator for the liftgate, it hadn't occurred to me that this could potentially be fixed (seems more like a design shortcoming). This scenario doesn't happen often, so I haven't dwelt on it... I'll add this to my (small) list of items to be looked at.

I have the same thing on my driveway. I hadn't noticed it a lot, so hadn't gotten to the incline part you mentioned yet. I will say that each time, pressing the button again does work.

I have had this happen. I've also had it do the same in a moderate breeze blowing on the squarely on liftgate (15 - 20 mph) on flat ground. It seems like maybe it's related to uneven loading of the liftgate? Perhaps the safety sensing is too sensitive?

Imagine this scenario. You are sleeping in the back, camping, and you use your phone to open the liftgate. Lo and behold it partially opens and then closes on you. Now you have to climb out of the side doors to go to the back to open it manually.
Hope it's not raining! It should not function this way! Therefore I request for everyone to check their liftgate now and request service from Rivian to fix this
!

I;ve had the exact same problem with the lift gate opening a bit and closing again. I was getting a message on the main screen that an object was in the way, when there was clearly nothing. Now that I think about it, I was also parked on an incline. The problem hasn't recurred since then but it did leave me very nervous. We're planning a major camping trip in February and the lift gate is a critical function. Fortunately, Rivian did schedule a service appoint for me that's only 3 months out (argh).

Thanks for pointing out this problem.

when camping you can LEVEL the Rivian to perfect horizontal flatness using the suspension setting via console - am I wrong?

I also have the same problem and it even happens on flat ground. My service appointment is in February and has been booked since early November.

Have never had our R1S refuse to open the hatch, but also not sure if we've ever tried to do it on much of an angle.
