Impact crates are really great! We were also considering that brand. If we did any air travel, Impact would have been the only option. Since we are in our vehicles for travel, I expect the body to take most of the impact/damage. The crate is to keep things contained. This is why we chose Ruff Land over Impact. But they were both neck and neck. Maybe the decision was made because I was at a Sportsman's Warehouse and they had the Ruff Land in front of me to buy??

I just got a new pup this week and we've been struggling w/ a dog hammock in the second row. Currently leaning towards getting a crate for the cargo area, but want something that'll be good for a curious/nervous pup (~20lbs) and will hopefully be ok once he's full grown (~140lbs). Would love to hear some recommendations, want to keep the little guy safe and comfortable.
When I don't have 2nd row passengers I let my two 20lb dogs have the 2nd row with a dog hammock. It works great.
If I have 2nd row passengers I will put the hammock in the 3rd row and it's a little more awkward getting them in and out but otherwise works fine.
In other SUV's previously I've used dog crates in the back cargo area.

I have always used crates. Dogs seem to like them.

Sometimes we have to wake them up at the destination.

Ruff Lands are good. We have several. They have many sizes..

Gunner Kennels are a little nicer and have slam latchesā€¦. Really heavy though.

I am pretty sure the rear cargo area on the S is not flat though.

From the photos it looks like you need a ā€œshimā€ piece.

Can anyone verify that?

There is a slight slope, be we lay down one seat and push the crate all the way to the second row. The crate sits flat without issue.

not a great pic, butyou can kinda see.

I also like the split tailgate on the S.

This is a ā€˜90 RRC and it gives you a place to stage the dogs or whatever while loading them.

You can see the slam latch on the crate, which makes it easier to deal with if your hands donā€™t like the squeeze method.

Those are English Cockers and are surprisingly good bird dogsā€¦.

Ended up getting the XL Ruffland kennel and I'm wishing I'd measured from the 3rd row bump up to the ceiling because while it easily fits into the tail, it gets TIGHT when trying to go up that slope. Took me a few minutes to get it squeezed in and to drag it back out again.

Not sure if anything can be done, but man an extra quarter inch of space would be helpful. I'd just leave it in there full time, but it does block half of the rear visibility.

Also, here's a pic of my (currently) little guy considering a jump down from the tailgate

Yes they are expensive but they are worth it. Get one and it will house your 140lb dog and he wonā€™t be getting out of it. I have a GSD and he cannot break out. My friend has a Malinois and he also cannot get out of his impact.

They are designed for strong and smart dogs to keep them safe and secure. Plus they fold up quickly and are aluminum so they are nice and light. One person can carry it easily for the size of my GSD.
Hey @Donald Stanfield - considering returning my Ruffland (it's just too much of a PITA to wedge this thing in and out of the back height-wise) and getting an Impact, what size do you have for your GSD? Looks like you're in a R1T, I've got the S and I think the regular 40" is the biggest that will fit height-wise in the back. Online specs have it at about 3/4" shorter than the Ruff land.

Impact 40" dimensions: 40.5"L x 23"W x 29.1"H
XL Ruff Land dimensions: is 40 3/8" L x 22" W x 29 7/8" H

So I wouldn't be losing much at all in size...just twice the money from my wallet. But for a long term investment it seems worth it.

The one I have is the 40ā€. Yes it very much is a buy once cry once purchase.

Our lab(s) have been riding in the second row seat of our Toyota Highlander (our R1S should be to us in a couple weeks) they have a WeatherTech seat cover(s) and we secure them with. Kurgo harness that secures to the seat belt.
