Hey there,

Someone bumped one of my side mirrors, and I noticed it was wobbling.

Turns out the mirror has been snapped off from interior plate that it’s welded to and is now only hanging on to the outer door paneling itself.

Rivian sent a mobile guy who said I could either take it to the SC and they would likely want to replace the whole door panel - OR (if I don’t want to re-mortgage my house) I could just take it to a body shop and they could simply weld the mirror back onto the plate. Problem solved. He said it’s not a big job, but obviously I’m nervous to take it elsewhere.

Has anyone else had experience doing this?

Should be a hit and run, no charge for you on your insurance if you file a police report (at least in Massachusetts). Even If you reattach it you really should have a recalibration. Not saying you really need it but your overhead camera view may not work correctly.

If this happened while you were parked, you can file a comprehensive claim. You just pay your deductible and it does not count against you. I would get it repaired correctly for the cost of the deductible.

While it won't get held against you now, it will still be counted as a claim, and still potentially impact your insurance rates or make it more difficult to go with another carrier. I just want through this a few years ago. Someone sideswiped our Tesla while parked when we were on vacation. Our insurance looked it as no fault of our own. They didn't raise our insurance rates but it went into the Lexis Nexis database. When I shopped other carriers, they all wanted to charge us a lot more because of it until 3 years after it happened.

That really shouldn’t be the case. When I shop around, they do not count comprehensive claims against me.

That was my understanding too. Every company I reached out to was holding it against me even though it clearly wasn't being reported as an "at fault" accident. When I asked them about it, they all said they were being more sensitive to ANY claim history and weighing at fault accidents heavier. YMMV and I was totally shocked.

I am counting down the days until I can change. It has been almost 3 years and next month I can change companies and see my rates drop a lot. I've been checking every 6 months, still the same story. Maybe it varies by state. I also reached out to Lexis Nexis to confirm that it wasn't reported as an at-fault accident, which it wasn't. Some of the insurance companies also confirmed that it wasn't showing as an at-fault accident.

Man that is infuriating. Glad that you are almost at the end of the road.

Why didn't you just opt out of data collection for lexis nexis?

UPDATE: For the same reasons Daytripping mentioned, I didn't want to go through the insurance. Ended up finding a body shop to re-install the plate. They used a combination of welding and moulding, but now it's all back to normal and looks good - doesn't seem to need recalibrating. The total for the repair was $900, which is a lot cheaper than getting the whole door replaced!

I didn't take any pictures I'm afraid, and after fixes there's nothing to take pictures of as it's all fixed! Basically there's an internal plate that keeps the mirror in place, and it had snapped loose, so the mirror was basically hanging on by just the exterior casing. They welded/molded the plate back in place.

gotcha. the entire mirror housing? unfortunate that it’s not more repairable for high risk part that might get hit… I asked because I also got hit on narrow streets, luckily the mirror just folded in.

Yeah, it was only a little bump and it totally snapped off from the plate. The guy at the shop said probably the reason it's so fragile is so it doesn't warp the whole window and door when you get bumped, but who knows
