I am an avid cyclist (3-5x weekly rides). I have used saris bones and clamp, rockymounts all 2-4 bike set up. My main gripe about these is that the 4 bike set up is very heavy and its a work out by itself. Putting on the 4 bike rack is such a hassle that I sometimes forgo it. When we got the R1s the height of the hitch is higher than our other vehicles that its much more difficult.
I mostly use 1 bike for when I am going to the trails on my mountain bike or going to a group ride with my roadie group. So my set up for the longest time is 2 separate bike racks (2 bike rack saris clamp and Rockymounts SplitRail for 4 bike setup). We are a family of 4 so there are times when I ride with my wife or one of my kids so a 2 bike is needed too.
Another gripe is storage.
The Mach 2 addresses both gripes I have. I have been using it for the past 3-4 months and here are some thoughts:
The Good:
1. Installation and removal is such a breeze. No tools needed and it is much lighter than my previous bike rack set ups. It is a quicker set up
2. Storage is great. It folds to a less bulky state.
3. Bike is secure with an accessory. Keys are all the same to secure the rack and the bikes. Even if you buy them at different times, they can make it in such a way that the keys are the same.
4. Costomer service is great!
The not so great:
1. As you add a rack the platform increases in height. It is a good thing in a sense that the bikes are not touching and rubbing. It just takes more effort to put the bikes on as you increase the number. There is an accessory ramp that you can buy to help with this. I did not get it.
2. The base rack comes in contact with the bumper quite slightly. When I use it as a 1 bike carrier I can slightly pull it out so it doesn't touch the bumper.
3. Because the hitch of the R1s is recessed, the tube part that goes into the reciever does not go all the way in. There are pads that expand in the tube to secure the hitch and a small part is out of the tube. Since I only carry 4 adult mountainbikes it is not a problem, If it was 4 ebikes then That would be a problem I guess. This rack is also rated for ebikes.
Final Thoughts:
It is an expensive set up but if you look beyond the cost and for the amount of use that I do, it suits me and my family well. I cross shopped it with 1up and the main reason I went with Quikr is the no tools, the ability to go 1-4 bikes in a breeze and the compact storage. You can technically put all 4 of them in your trunk! Hope this helps someone.
