I am the one that took the pictures at the San Bernardino RAN. It is a quad motor gen 2 with bronze rims, and is not a wrap. I was able to open the doors. The person driving the vehicle does not work for Rivian, he works for a movie studio. And they are using it for transportation or in the movie, he wasn't specific. He was saying that he was supposed to be on set at Cher's house but because of the fires they were not allowed in the area. From what I am hearing this is supposed to be a new color choice.
I assume by "I was able to open the doors" you also mean the charging port?

why dump Compass Yellow and then add this? its going to have the same if not lower take rate. i get they might want a new color for the new quad but this is risky.

it also doesn't fit their previous MO of not leaking colors. my guess is this is a "test" to see how folks respond.

id go another direction. maybe copper, dust/sand, Slate and Evergreen which they teased a long time ago or even a more bold green or grey. folks will more likely buy those than purple.
There's probably more folks who would get this purple than compass yellow. It's a lot more muted, and Dodge popularized it with their plum crazy color.

Variety is great. Ugly is on the eye.
All I can say about a purple R1S therefore is 'pourquoi!!!?'
And as if that were not [fill in], it actually comes with the gary cartoon badge thing to boot.

Especially with a 426....and a manual. I could spend foolishly on one of those....even in purple. Purple is better on a muscle car than a elegant SUV, etc...at least to me.

thank you Gonzo. That is helpful information. Did he happen to say when / where he picked up the vehicle? I'm wondering if it's newly built and they've started production... or if it's from past June when they built initial cars for debut.
He did not say how long he had, had it but that he mentioned that they hurried painting it and getting it to them and showed that they didn't put some of the trim on properly.

I didn't think of opening the charge port, but he wasn't using an adapter when he plugged in the charger.
Somewhat throws a wrench into the theory of Rivian starting the year off with NACS ports, but not entirely since we have no idea when this vehicle was actually built.

I'm still hoping they'll start shipping quads with CCS ports or give people a choice at the beginning. I've installed the GM V2H system at home, and the EVSE has a J1772+CCS connector on the end of it. Even if I'm using it with a vehicle that doesn't support bi-directional, it still requires a vehicle with a CCS port. I could install something else or use an adapter on one of my older EVSEs, but I'd really rather not have to.

Definitely not! I love options! More the merrier! Just purple..not my thing on such an elegant vehicle. More something I would consider on a GT3 but even then....probably wouldn't go that direction.

But It will be fun to see on road anyway!
Yeah personally not a fan and like you said even on a Porsche I still wouldn’t take it. And heck this is coming from a guy who drives a mandarin yellow car. 🤣

That is the beauty of manufacturing made to order as opposed to made to stock, not much risk in offering a color like this, if not ordered it will not be built. Putting out a color like this is a good way to test the market. If the orders lag they will just drop it like they did with Compass Yellow. With people always looking for unique colors other brands don’t have the popularity could surprise people.

On another not I’m still confused why people are in a rush for the NACS port:

— Most of the non-Tesla networks will have CCS for awhile, especially on the existing locations, requiring an adapter for those if you have a NACS port.

— The NACS port does not enable any other Superchargers than you get with the NACS adapter.

Personally I like that the port/plug is better designed and easier to engage.
