PSA - Be careful sending wires to Rivian

Hey all - Just wanted to give you a heads up to be really careful if you decide to wire Rivian money for your order.

I did so yesterday for my down payment, copied the information exactly as provided by Rivian. Bank of America (Rivian's bank) rejected the wire due to incorrect account information and decided to keep a $45 fee for themselves.

Not sure what went wrong I checked the details again and they match exactly. Fingers crossed I can get this sorted out today so I don't have to delay my delivery.

I suggested to my guide that Rivian should compensate me for the $45 fee but we'll see what happens

Ugh. My wife runs a multi-family office and deals with wires, bill pay and BoA all the time. Things are just as fubar in that space as with the supply chain…

I suppose you can be thankful they didn’t charge you the fee, take your truck money then tell you they never received your funds…

ACH is a PITA. Everyone who collects money now wants to ditch paper bills and checks and demands you authorize unfettered access to your bank accounts…all for the sake of your ‘convenience’ you see?….

Doesn’t seem like they know what went wrong. I talked to my guide and she checked with the payments folks and didn’t really get an answer.

She is attempting to get me a $45 refund so we shall see if that happens.

Not risking sending another wire since they can’t tell me why the first didn’t work. Just going to use a different payment method.

This issue cost me $70 ($25 was the transaction fee and $45 is the rejection fee). So the last thing I want to do it to burn another $70.

I'll probably have to use a different method.

Bummer.. No I never got an explanation.

Rivian did reimburse my $45 but I was very stubborn and it took them a while. But I think that is just the corporate bureaucracy rather than them not wanting to make things right.

For what its worth the ACH option worked fine for me in the end.

Best to transfer the funds to your personal checking or savings account, then do the ACH to Rivian, if that is where you need to send the funds.

Ah, so the wire from E*Trade is the common thread here. Maybe that is the real PSA then.

Hi there,

I had thought about wiring the funds (ACH may be free) to Rivian but decided against it. I didn't feel comfortable paying so much for something I have not received yet.

I read on a few threads that there were delays with the earlier deliveries and some folks had to wait for their trucks while the money is already paid. I didn't want to be "out of pocket". Of course there's also the wire fee.

My guide said cashier's check is acceptable. So I ended up just getting a cashier's check (no fee at my bank) and giving it in person during the delivery.
