Is it possible to have a build with a title/Curb weight in excess of 6,000#?

This makes it exempt from a use tax here in Seattle (along with all other 3/4 ton trucks), saving around 1.1% per year of tax. It will reduce my registration costs from $1,000/year to $200/year.

Probably not. I don’t know the official curb weight, but I’ve heard 5,800 lbs. seems like they’ll be under 6k.

You might want to contact customer service and ask them if the max pack battery puts it over 6k lbs. The specs I saw was 5886 with the 135 kw battery. It is possible the 180 battery could add more than 114 lbs.

The IRS uses 6000 GVWR, not curb weight - does WA not do the same?

I love that WA reduces your taxes while CA forces "commercial" and "weight" fees on top of it all. When considering registration, insurance, maintenance, and fuel, my 2013 Sierra 3500HD is the most expensive vehicle to keep while my 2017 Corvette Z06 is close to the cheapest. I don't have any idea how that works. I suppose I could skip the R1 and just get another Corvette, as soon as the new Z06 is announced.
I am really curious how TCO will compare between the R1T and the 3500HD. I know fuel will be more expensive in my 3500HD, as will oil changes, but the registration and insurance will surely be quite a bit more on the R1T.

They are really different tools for different jobs, comparison to a 1 ton diesel is not a fair one. The Rivian sits somewhere between a traditional 1/2 ton pickup and a sport activity pickup (IE: close to the older 2000's Dakota/ and maybe to a lesser extent, the new Colorado/ranger). However it leans closer to the 1/2 ton.

The fact it's as heavy as a 3/4 ton is unintended consequences of electric. It's simply due to battery weight rather than capabilities.

@pc500 i completely agree with you. The R1T will never replace a heavy duty truck. In my world, it will be a commuter and fourth vehicle. If I have to replace one, it will replace a Honda CR-V. I'll keep the Corvette for fun and the 3500 for hauling.

How are you coming up with 1000$? I just registered a Defender that cost me about what the R1T will and it only cost me ~150$ to register it. I'm not in Seattle anymore, but the use tax where I am is actually *higher*.

You must live outside the borders of the Puget sound regional Transit authority. That's where the tax is originating. It's 1.1% of the vehicles value per year. I just renewed license plates for a Nissan leaf and it was over $600.

Ah, that is the difference, I am just a little bit outside of it. I wasn't aware of where the boundaries for that specific tax were. Thanks!

According to this link - which may or may not still be accurate in 2021 - a 40kwh increase adds 350lbs of weight.

So the max pack - if it's exactly 180kwh instead of exactly 135kwh - would add about 393lbs

Which - If the 135kwh battery truly has a weight of 5886 - puts the max pack at 6279lbs

WY is even worse. Annual use tax is 3% of the adjusted vehicle value based on MSRP and the age of the car. In the first year it’s 3% of 60% of MSRP. That’s about $1400 and is in addition to 5% sales tax. Each year the adjustment factor goes down by 10 percentage points until it’s reduced to 20% of MSRP where it then remains constant.

Lots of road mileage to maintain in WY, and only 500,000 residents to spread the costs across. Sucks, but all the extra elbow room is worth it.

On the plus side, you don't have a 11.2% sales tax + a 1.1% annual value tax... and your depreciation table is pretty good, starting at 60%.

However like Washington, at least you have no income tax.
