I just re watched the video that RJ posted of the folded seats in the R1S, and noticed this
Rivian R1T R1S Possible Power Tailgate for R1S?? Screen Shot 2021-03-16 at 5.19.12 PM

Rivian claimed only the lift gate was powered and that the tailgate was manual, but I clearly see a button

Here is a picture of an earlier prototype
Rivian R1T R1S Possible Power Tailgate for R1S?? 032983a0-85ea-44d3-bbe9-5662eaaae6c0-jpeg.541

There used to be a handle to open the tailgate? Have they changed the design and added a powered tailgate? Let me know what you guys think

If anything, they may have changed to a power release (like the R1T tailgate and gear tunnel doors) but not to a fully powered tailgate.

That’s my thought, too. May be power release with a strut or torsion bar, but could still be a manual close.

The R1T owners would be pissed if we got a power tailgate & they didn't!

It won't happen, but I would definitely chuckle if it did. I would prefer manually operated tailgate, but power open & close liftgate is a must.

Could it be a motion sensor of some sort? I can't determine if its a button, it looks to sit too low to be useful as button.

On a side note, whatever that is, I hate that it is not in the middle!

There are other vehicles where the tailgate release is not centered. I think the idea is if you center your body on the tailgate then your hand is off-center, anyway, so put the button where it feels natural.

I happen to be left-handed, so I empathize with taht struggle.

Interestingly, my Volvo has the sensor on the LEFT side. Works great for me.

If you're using your hand to activate the kick sensor then you may be doing it wrong..... or I am.

It's been said that only left-handed people are in their right mind.?

Incidentially, has anyone thought to ask Rivian if a kick sensor would be included on the R1S? I haven't seen any mention of it so I assume not, but it's worth asking.

I also happen to be left handed :)

Most vehicles I used have it off centered to accommodate the latches that are usually in the middle, but this one seems to be a bit far from any mechanism that I can think of. It's not going to add or subtract from the car, but I have issue with lack of symmetry; its a personal issue :)

Like the land rover Discovery tailgate : https://www.autotrader.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/262504.jpg

I can't drive behind it, it drives me insane!

btw... what’s the point of a tailgate in a SUV? Doesn’t it make it harder to load heavy stuff with the tailgate since you got to bend inside to drop the stuff in? (Assuming you don’t open and close the manual tailgate every time you got to load stuff)
