I had AT3Ws on my 4Runner. They *were* great, but if it's not your daily driver (i.e. you put a lot of miles on them quickly) I'd probably avoid the AT3W and I assume the newer AT4W. After 6 years they were basically hockey pucks and even though they had plenty of tread depth, they essentially had no grip in the wet. I wound up replacing them with another set of AT3W before a big off-road trip and the fresh ones were once again great. I just wouldn't run them for more than a couple years per set because where my original set was...they were unsafe on anything but a dry road.
Hmmm. That’s interesting about your A/T3W experience. I had them on my FJ Cruiser for almost 30K miles. Never experienced the issues you seem to have had. Never had any wet weather issue. And, they were always very good in the snow. Of course, I did not have them for 6 years. After 6 years, I doubt any tire will be worth a darn. Don’t think I have ever had a set of tires for anything close to 6 years.

Agreed. I just crossed 20k miles on mine and they look pretty good. They have gotten louder over time, but it’s not unbearable. It’s so strange the different totals folks have gotten out of these tires. Some were done at barely 10k, others make it past 40k miles.

I plan to swap them out in the Fall for the Toyo Open Country AT3 EV. I don’t want to risk another winter on the Pirellis - they aren’t great on packed snow😬
I think a lot of this discrepancy likely boils down to a couple things, primarily:
  • Many R1 vehicles seem to come with bad alignments from factory (3 of 4 trucks we have have needed at least one alignment job within the first 10k miles or less, and with two of them, prematurely wore their tires unevenly). I strongly suspect anyone getting under 20k miles who drives gingerly must have at least had some alignment issue at some point (I did, and had 2/16ths on one tire at 17k miles—on a demo truck I got at 10k miles that definitely had an off alignment for some time before I took ownership). I wouldn’t say I drive aggressively, certainly not very often, but the combination of uneven wear and very loud pushed me into swapping to Outpost nATs sooner than I had hoped (17k miles). My father’s Pirelli ATs were abnoxiouslt loud and pretty bald (unevenly, even after a couple alignments), when he decided he couldn’t endure the sound anymore and got his Nokian nATs at 22k miles.

  • Driving habits (specifically having to do with acceleration, braking, and cornering speeds/forces).

This is certainly the most powerful vehicle I and many have had, and all but certainly the most powerful/fastest/heaviest vehicle (combined) for anyone getting one of the quads (where most of the early higher mileage reports had to have come from. I believe this was the quickest production truck 0-60 when released, and had to have had the lowest 0-60 time:weight ratio of anything ever produced commercially, all with exceptional handling characteristics (especially for its weight, again).

These combined attributes seem to be a fairly obvious recipe for having the capability to roast tires quickly, and honestly, the very same attributes that allow these vehicles to ā€œhide their weightā€ also mean that some are likely driving their tires harder than they may realize (think of how much drama and noise a Raptor or TRX would make to drive at speeds that can feel very smooth/tame in a Rivian… now imagine tires between the road and said 7k+ lb. vehicle).

Just ordered these Pirellis Scorpion XTM A/T since I called my Costco, America's Tires, and several boutique tire stores and none would install any 115XL tires (I was gonna do the Bridgestone Dueler Ascent A/T) on my R1S because the placard indicates HL. So the Pirelli 116HL checks those requirements. I hate the price though.

Got the new Pirelli XTM AT tires installed on all 4 corners with road force balancing.

Next up is alignment with Rivian tomorrow.

I’ll post my full review once I get it back from Rivian and put some miles on it.

For now what I noticed is the steering is very responsive and grip is good.

I still need to test some more after alignment because that my impression with 4 miles.

I got like 1.92 miles per kWh in those 4 aggressive miles which is in line with what I expect.

Normally I average 2.00 miles per kWh with roadtrips in the mix with my lead foot on 34ā€ AT.

[awesome stuff and photos]
Any chance you'll be doing any off-pavement stuff? (Especially rock crawling, negotiating some muddy tight turns, etc)?

That's where I'm most interested to see improvement.

Just had them installed. My OEM 22ā€ only lasted 20k. I can tell after driving back home that road noise was less noticeable than my OEMs, and the ride comfort actually feels more improved. I know these are 4-5lbs heavier so I know the range efficiency should take a marginal hit.

Hah, responded to your post on FB too. Eager to see what your efficiency is.

If I got these, it would be purely for looks. I have a 20" wheelset with KO2s for off roading. There's a high chance I just go with street wheels again for longevity and efficiency since these will be on 22s.

At some point I will take these off-road but that will honestly be in 3-6 months once I get my car back from Rivian and when the local Rivian owners group set’s up an off roading event for summer or after summer.

I might consider taking a trip to Colorado this summer and try them out off-road with my family.

I still need re-install the rock sliders that I had to take off for Rivian to complete the HVAC drain plug campaign.

it’s supposed to be better off-road and better Sidewalls for improved puncture protection along with better mud traction + snow/slush compared to OEM pirelli.

Pirelli XTM AT - Reasons to Purchase Brochure

Car and Driver Review of Pirelli XTM AT

it’s very cushy / comfortable tire for on road and does a solid job soaking up potholes, dips and manhole covers.

I feel like I could take turns faster with OEM Pirelli but I really need to first get it aligned and puts some miles down on some nice twisty back-roads to see how well they perform from grip standpoint / stability compared to OEM.

I believe one member on Reddit will take his Rivian with Pirelli XTM AT to MOAB in the future.

Nice, I missed that. What’s the load rating on yours? I know that Pirelli is offering them in different ones:

So this is a real question. Why AT tires on a 50's profile series tire?

Isn't the purpose of AT is to be able to run lower tire pressure on off roads and lose terrain? Be able to absorb more impact? By having lower profile tire and lower pressure, there is a higher chance of rim damage or tire damage. right?

Is it for looks and maybe a hard packed off roads/snow?

Clearly there are demands for them as tire companies makes them. If no demand existed, they would not.

Just curious...

Yea the 22s are not protected at all if you are going to go rock crawling but the XTM will probably help a lot. I'm more a Michelin Man but there isn't an LTX AT for the Riv. Terrain Contact AT or this XTM looks like the choices or stick to a regular LTX. 99% pavement miles so that figures big (100 miles offroad in the last 10K). I bought a shop vehicle and it came with 22s. Nice on the pavement for handling but I still take it off road. They are fine for normal forest roads. I got a quick lesson in low profile non aired down street tires when I first got the Rivian.

I've been using Pirelli P7 Cinturato all season's on my cars for years, I love this brand. I see many don't on here.
