Yes. I've been told they use the Yakima SKS system.
SKS Lock Cores – Yakima
Excellent news that it may be possible. Rivian should include that information in the accessory guide/manual if true.

Yikes on the price, however. It seems they're $30 per pair. On my Thule I got a six pack for $30. Oh well, cry once and be happy, I suppose.

Yeah. Better price in bulk, $100 for 8 ($12.50 per vice $20 per for 2) but still pricey.

The tent is Yakima, all the roof rack accessories they sell are Yakima, they highlight the crossbars being co-developed by Yakima on the website… Fairly clear that they use Yakima locks.

Huh, pretty sure I paid just north of $100 for an 8 pack when I got my Thule system about a decade ago.

Although.....swiss cheese up top ?‍♂

That doesn't mean the cylinders are replaceable. I hope they are, but given the manual doesn't say anything about it, I didn't think it was a good idea to assume anything.

They pretty much have to be replaceable, as a function of how most lock cylinders like this are installed(put in special blank key, pull cylinder in/out). A permanently molded in lock code would be highly unusual.

Thanks for the very detailed photos and observations!
The wood stain on the forest green interior just looks SO good. I wish it wasn't so expensive for a non-functional item.

What follows are our observations from the First Mile Event on Saturday, October 2nd, in Normal, IL. We are pre-order holders for a Max Pack R1T, and our initial configuration was Glacier White exterior with Black Mountain interior and 20" AT tires.

This was my absolute first time seeing the R1T in person. Pictures do not do this vehicle justice! Seeing the fit and finish in person really brings home the premium feel of this truck. Additionally, the exterior and interior colors really need to be seen in person and also seem to change based on lighting. Saturday morning was overcast in Normal, and many of the colors looked different from photos we've seen online in full sun vs. shade. The Compass Yellow in particular, was much more a deep, rich yellow than any photos I've seen of it. I really liked it in person, but was outvoted 1-1 on this color. ;-) In fact, most colors on display (only ones we didn't see in person were Limestone and Canyon Red) looked much better than online photos. The only color we were not considering was Forrest Green, as that's just not our color, but to each their own. Interior color options also need to be seen in person, as these surprised us as well. Initially, we were leaning towards Black Mountain, as we've always been black interior people. However, there is a distinct green stitching to these seats that doesn't really come out in the online photos. Additionally, the black wood looked very ashy and washed out, at least in the overcast lighting. For us a turn-off, but again, to each their own. We were surprised to be drawn toward the Ocean Coast interior. It was much more a grey color, with slight hints of blue, in person. Additionally, we liked the black accent colors in the stitching and inserts. We are still not sold on the natural ash wood color, as it can appear a bit pinkish to whitewashed. We've heard in full sunlight, this has a much more natural tone. We would be tempted to darken this wood with a light over-stain someday, or alternatively change out the wood trim to the brown trim that comes with the green seating. That brown trim really pops. Would be interested to hear from others that are considering a similar move, as to how they think that might be possible.

Additional observations from this weekend:

  • Most of the vehicles displayed the 20" AT tires, and none had the blacked out rims. We did not see an example of the 21" tires. The 22" tires were on a Rivian Blue model that was set to a "low" ride height. A really interesting look, almost "low-riderish" :-D. For contrast, there was an El Cap Grey set at a "high" ride height, and it too had a unique perspective. Interesting how the vehicle looks so different at different heights!
  • The full size spare looks to be a nice add-on, especially if anyone is considering any off roading. Really liked how it is stowed in the bed, and can be removed, leaving an underbed storage space perfect for an improvised "tailgate cooler" that has a drain plug as well.
  • The camp kitchen looked even more impressive in person. One aspect of the camp kitchen that hadn't caught my attention previously was that the whole unit was in three pieces that can be easily lifted off in sections by one person. Also, the water reservoir has a spray hose attachment that can really shoot water a good distance. Perfect for hosing off whatever needs cleaned.
  • The ever-important cup holders were much more sturdy in person than they appeared online. They look entirely usable!
  • Having not seen pictures of the all-weather floor mats previously, they were really attractive and functional looking in person, and the Rivian compass logo insert is a nice touch.
  • The center console is huge! The gull wing opening is unique and took a bit for me to get use to, but overall very nice. The very large charging mat that sits in front of the console is a very nice touch and a perfect location, IMO. It also seems big enough to charge two phones at once, but I could only approximate this by placing my phone on the left and right side and confirming that my phone charged in both locations. There is also a slot at the front of the charging mat that allows one to prop their phone up for better viewing (although, obviously without charging).
  • The frunk did not appear that large at first glance, but when you pop up the foldable floor (and snap in place at the back of the frunk with two magnetic latches) the depth really adds to the storage capacity. Probably not needed for a trip to the grocery store, but on long trips, you can throw bigger bags up front as well.
  • Both front and rear seating was better than anticipated. I'm a big guy, 6'4" and head room was absolutely no problem, and seat comfort was great. Could do long trips without issue. Rear seating was even comfortable and enough leg room for my height.
  • Interior, in general, was very pleasant. Very nice touches throughout. There were speakers EVERYWHERE, and sound quality was exceptional. The suede headliner looked (and felt) very classy in person. Wasn't sure about that when I heard it was suede. The wood grained interior was fantastic, although we're still not sold on colors.
  • We didn't go into a deep dive on the infotainment center, as we could have spent all day and not giving it justice, but was impressed by all the camera views and the ability to do almost everything from the center screen. I'm still thinking it was a mistake not to include Sirius/XM radio, as this being sold as an adventure vehicle, there WILL be times when you are in the middle of nowhere and without cell service. It sure would be nice to be able to switch to Sirius/XM for content without having to worry about connecting your phone via bluetooth and making sure you've remembered to downloaded Spotify playlists to your phone!
  • The removable bluetooth speaker under the center console sounds great! The one video I included was of it playing tunes at the camp kitchen setup. The video doesn't really do the speaker justice. It really pumps out tunes!
  • One random observation to end: I've never really noticed the air scoop built into the front fender well before, but a nice style touch (that I'm sure is functional as well).
I'm sure there's a lot I've missed. If you see anything in the pics you have questions about, let me know. Go see this vehicle in person when/if you have the chance. We drove 4.5 hours to do so, and it was well worth it!

Thank you for your insight on this. We have changed our interior options at 4 times, and will now probably just wait until we see it. I wanted black exterior and black interior, but now I am strongly considering Ocean Coast interior. Thanks again!

Go contrast, wish I could — green/green.

Good write up, thanks!

1. I totally wish the ocean cost wood was a different color and contemplated changing it somehow (stain, paint, etc) I just feel there's a lot of it and it would be quite labours and probably not as good as a result as I would like. But 100% loved the grey interior.

2. You being 6'4", did you feel the steering wheel seemed a bit small? I honestly did, smaller then my Range Rover Sport and Velar, and since the R1T is a larger vehicle it just seemed a bit off.

3. I honestly felt the center console was still on the small side, considering this is a truck I feel that vast majority of trucks have a larger center console storage area then R1T. Not that it isn't a good size (it is totally functional), but I feel it's on the smaller side especially considering that there's no glove compartment.

No two ways about it though the R1T is the most amazing pick-up truck I've ever seen (former F-150 owner), and had the pleasure of being behind the wheel of. I really do think it is such a good looking vehicle inside and out, and the quality/fit and finish amongst trucks is by far the best pit there. In the SUV segment the competition gets a little bit sstiffer for the R1S, but all in all it is a beautiful vehicle.

Did you see any trucks with a gear shuttle only?
No, unfortunately. The only gear shuttle I saw had the camp kitchen installed. I do have a picture of the gear shuttle from the other side of the camp kitchen, but I too would have liked to see the shuttle by itself and play around with it's functionality.

#1. 100% agree. I wonder how many of us might attempt to change the ocean coast wood color aftermarket? I wonder if anyone out there has an idea of how hard it would be to remove these wood trim pieces, as that would be the best way to modify them. I too love the grey interior, moreso even in person.
#2. Not when I was sitting behind the wheel, so first impressions were not that bad for me. I must be adaptable, as I've gone from a F150 to a Kia hybrid ;-D
#3. Maybe it was a bit on the small side, as compared to the console I had in the F150. That thing was cavernous! The downside to such a large center console is that I tended to cram everything in it! Going from that to the Kia, which was tiny, was difficult!

I too agree that it's the most amazing truck I've seen! Can't wait!!

Found this Reddit posting by happen-stance in a Google search for 'Rivian First Mile Event'. No idea who this is but sounds a little jaded at times, elsewhere enthusiastic. Take it for what it's worth:

Another Attendee to the First Mile Event. Feedback

First Mile
My father and I attended the first mile event in Normal on Sunday. We drove down from Michigan (3.5hrs). I'm considering purchasing one and wanted to see it first hand. Here are a couple observations that I had, these are random order. Overall, I loved the truck, a lot of my observations are critical and I wanted to make sure I shared them.
  • We received many different excuses to why we couldn't use the tonneau cover. My attempts to use it would give me a "Object in the way" error message. One Rivian employee told us that it was because most consumers won't even use it and they have it disabled for the event. Another employee said people would be moving it back and forth and "Playing with it" and they didn't want that. Could you imagine if we got there and they said you can't roll the windows up and down? Isn't that the point? There is some untold story here and I'm not sure what it is. None of the trucks had a manual cover for the rear.
  • I asked about the shuttle with the kitchen and how you remove that if you don't want it. He said that the slide is installed at the factory and shouldn't be removed. You can remove the kitchen part but the slide always stays. The kitchen plugs into the 110v and 12v outlets.
  • I had a bunch of time with the software and I can tell you its not very usable. Long delays when switching between maps and music. Sometimes you would hit a button and nothing would happen. I would hit it again thinking it didn't register my tap and nothing. Eventually the screen would catch up and switch over. It would be very frustrating if I was actually driving it. Just to be clear, these cars weren't moving, they were parked. Software version was 2021.37.1. I hope this is just software bugs and not underpowered hardware.
  • The rear screen has a weird flicker to it. I witnessed it on all vehicles. Here is the video of it.
  • They had a white truck with ocean interior and you could really see how the ocean interior is not white. It looked much more grey to me then white.
  • Rivian would not tell us the weight of the vehicle. They said that once they get into full production they want to "put her on a diet". Again...not sure what that meant.
  • The tunnel doors have a mini storage space in them. This door for this storage only locks on one side. After multiple people pull on it it looks like this. Out of all the stuff on the truck it was one of the cheapest feeling things I could find.
  • The front doors all have a stone protection film on the lower portion that comes up about 4 inches. I believe this is because of a vent by the side camera protection film side vent
  • I didn't get a picture of it but I got to see one of the trucks without a spare and it had a plastic spacer inside where the spare goes. In that plastic spacer it looks like there was some type of inverter maybe? not sure what it was but it was from the factory and it was in plastic. The spacer was T shape with this item sitting in the center of it. The T spacer allowed you to have three little storage compartments there kept things from rolling around.
  • Opening the area where the spare sits is one handed and you can do it very easily...Closing it is not the same and requires that you push hard on the passenger side to get it to click. Open on the driver side and push down on the passenger side.
  • I tested all the windows and they all had auto up and auto down besides the passenger front door. For some reason it wouldn't do the auto up.
  • I climbed up into to the tent (5'10", 205lbs) and it felt VERY stable. Confirmed it can go on the roof and on the bed. Rivian said some customers have ordered two tents...one for the roof and one for the bed.
  • My father spent 36yr in tool and die for GM. He is very critical when it comes to fit-and-finish of the body. He was looking at things I would have never thought about looking at. He was very impressed with gaps and quality of the body.

Found this Reddit posting by happen-stance in a Google search for 'Rivian First Mile Event'. No idea who this is but sounds a little jaded at times, elsewhere enthusiastic. Take it for what it's worth
No way to know for sure, but this review feels authentic. The issues mentioned are things others touched on, although most tended to gloss over, sugarcoat, or otherwise dismiss them. Most of it still sounds fixable via OTA updates. Others, like the tonneau issues... definitely makes me wonder if that's delaying things right now (and rightfully so).

Might be able to chalk a lot of it up to the "preproduction" thing, but at the same time I don't think it's safe to assume that. Maybe they're juuuuust on the wrong side of ready. Hopefully they take the time they need to get things ironed out before a wider launch. (That is painful to write!)

It is nice to see a more objective point of view.

I’d consider most of the concerns pre/early production ones. No matter what mass produced car you’re buying, early ones will have some teething problems. It is the nature of the beast. Given that Rivian told motor trend they revised the tonneau covers for production, I’m surprised the people working the event aren’t using that line. I’m unworried because warranty. ?

reassuring to see someone with decades of time at GM in tool and die being impressed. Believe it or not GM has some of the best body quality, in terms of shutlines etc.
