140 hp turbo? Overkill. A EREV does not need a powerful gasoline motor. Its job is to be a fossil fuel burning electric generator. Not to drive the wheels and mechanically propel the car. Because of that it also does not need to rev. It can run at constant low RPM. See Mazda's rotary EREV. It won awards in Europe, for its application in the EREV MX-30. But for whatever reason, contrary to past official statements, Mazda chose not to bring that drivetrain to the US (emissions certification perhaps? cost vs profit challenges because of ÂĄ to $ exchange rate?).

All good points. In the video, he talks about how he researched the engines VW produces, and that specific one seemed like the best fit based on power output and size. Of course, Scout/VW can build a new engine and not use something existing, but he made an assumption that it would be more likely for them to adapt an existing engine than build something new. It is a reasonable assumption, I think.

At least Scout realizes the importance of having some sort of rear bumper/protection that can at least prevent damage from something as common as a runaway Costco shopping cart. That plastic fascia Rivian uses is a complete joke, and making it almost flush with the upper part of the tailgate is just unfathomable as this is supposed to be a "pickup truck".

I sort of get the geographic affiliation with the plant being near Columbia but the emphasis on the University of South Carolina (both in the commercial and here) is a bit tone deaf when there is another state school in SC that not only is known as an engineering school but actually has its own automotive research facility.

It feels very "hello fellow kids."
