So I didn't think about the fact that you can carry extra fuel around with the range extender, possibly extending that added range even further. So I will take back what I said. It doesn't seem fully like a gimmick but it simply feels weird. The infrastructure and technology is likely to be greatly improved in 4-5 years. The on-board generator doesn't seem all that bad, besides the whole burning fuels thing, theoretically though you shouldn't need to use it much.

(Was trying to post this in the now-closed R2 Forum thread.)
I watched the reveal, curious. I came away unimpressed. The SUV seems like a nice enough vehicle, but it's definitely not for me, personally. I'm no off-roader - I want a comfortable, spacious people and cargo mover and the R2 is going to fit my needs well.

Traveler is bigger than an R1S which is already too big for me. I don't care anything about solid rear axles and locking differentials. And the gas extender thing... I'm really honestly not sure how I feel about that yet. More range, sure, but what does it do to battery pack size, complexity, and safety.

And $60k? Fingers crossed I'll be able to get a really well equipped R2 for that price vs a base model.

I'm sure the Traveler will be a good vehicle for a lot of people, but it definitely strikes me as a niche vehicle whereas R2 (and especially R3) will be mass volume vehicles and the future of Rivian.

It is for those remote areas where there might never be charging infrastructure

Uh Rivian, We've got a problem.
If Scout delivers, it's going to be a very compelling vehicle. Heck, I've already put in a reservation for both the SUV and Pickup. My wife admitted she might want the SUV over the R3X. It's going to be a hard road with competition like this..

Also, it's pretty obvious Scout is using Rivian tech that VW bought. The infotainment screen's Nav is identical to the R1 and Scout boasted about the "modern zonal architecture" which I guarantee is coming straight from the R1 Gen 2.

The range extender is a very surprising move. With one move, Scout just killed range anxiety for any naysayers. Frankly, I want that drivetrain for overlanding.

Well done Scout. With VW's backing, I have zero doubt they'll be successful. They certainly aren't as boring as VW.

Towing.

That's the big benefit of a truck/SUV for a range extender. Same with the upcoming RAM with range extender. If you don't tow, it's pretty much pointless.

Yeah, my wife and I were talking that it feels like they took all of the common complaints about an R1 and addressed them. Most of the Rivian owners I am friends with have a scout reservation or two on day one...

Both these check a lot of boxes for me:
  • direct sales (no dealership) Huge plus for me
  • Air suspension
  • Good mix of screens and hard buttons
  • Canvas top is a huge bonus for me
  • Large frunk
  • Powered cover for glass roof (noted in FAQ)
  • Range sounds promising
  • Power/0-60 sounds promising
  • Price sounds promising (TBD with options above)
  • Looks fantastic!
  • Roll down rear window = Love
  • Locking diffs is perfect for off-roading. Rivian isn’t as great as it should be there
  • Range extender is a great option, though likely not needed by myself, but huge plus for others especially towing

Questions /concerns I have:
  • What will service look like? Mobile is a must but if they partner with VW dealerships for SCs that’d be huge bonus
  • Mobile app and PAAK is a must
  • Timing kind of sucks. Our Kia EV6 lease is up mid-2026 so likely still looking hard at an R2
  • Size was disappointing for both vehicles. R2 is about the perfect size for my wife and R1 is perfect for me. The Scouts are both really huge. Will there be smaller models out later, closer to R2 size?
  • Apple CarPlay is asked on the FAQ but they say “more information coming”. I’m doing okay with my add-on CP screen but really want to support an integrated solution for my next car if I can.
  • Would miss my gear tunnel dearly 😢
All that said, I reserved one of each just for fun (who knows what I’ll be into in 3 years? 😊)

It looks interesting. Definitely got some things on their spec sheet that I wish the R1 has. Not sure if they will hit all those by the time production starts, but it's a zero risk reservation. I reserved the Truck with the gas powered range extender. 🤨 Yep it sounds just as weird typing it out as I was watching the video and repeating their words..

I'm surprised by all the no buttons concerns in R1's. It seems to me to be similar to 1 pedal driving concerns. After 2 days you never miss the old way.

Once I setup my vehicles. I use the buttons on the steering wheel each drive and pretty much nothing else. When I use the screen it's a quick push. Nav screen or music screen and that's it.

Not for me. My reasons:

1. Too big. R1T and S are already big enough
2. Need to carry 7 people
3. Highly doubt they’ll be able to hit $60K. Literally every single debut of a car resulted in higher prices (from Rivian, Ford, GM, Tesla)
4. I hate buttons. I prefer fewer buttons the better
5. Locking diffs and solid rear axle are really ICE leftovers. Does Scout have a low gear? If not, what’s the point?
6. Aesthetically, looks about a generation too old for me. I’m in my 40s.
7. Gas powered range extender is a total cop-out signal

VW didn't get anything from Rivian but the zonal architecture and ECU software. Nothing else. All infotainment and ADAS software were excluded from the JV.

Looks like you are trying very hard not to like it. Stick with Rivian. The idea of variety is to satisfy a market with different needs.

The confirmation bias in almost every post on this topic......is very obvious.
