Hi All,

I recently acquired a 2023 R1S Adventure Quad motor. I have new “LT275/50R-22 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 E” installed, which are obviously aggressive tires designed for more than road driving.

With that said, they are 22’s and have limited sidewall space. In other ORV’s I’ve had smaller rims with more wall.

What type of off-roading is possible in the Rivian with this configuration? Specifically, what category trails? I’ve comfortably driven cat 1-4/5 with other vehicles with more wall. I don’t do stupid things, I take it slow and steady, etc.

Thoughts?

I have K02s on 20 inch wheels. Plenty of space for almost all off roading in the high position. Don’t try with low! Why did you get 22s for off roading?

I didn’t get the 22’s, it’s just what the truck came with.

If you want to do some serious off-roading you go with a smaller wheel where your tire can have a much higher tread wall. You can also deflate the tire more with a thicker tire. But most off roading on a dirt road should be fine with 22s.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Honestly, I’m not sure why anyone would put 22’s on a truck like this. Any recommendations on wheels and where to get them?

I went to Americas Tire. They are allied in some way with Rivian, at least here in SoCal. Try their advice. I bought my K02s and wheels there. I switch out between OEM wheels and Michelins LTs for normal driving and 20 inch offriad wheels and k02. Since I bought most of these from them they do the switch as as a ‘seasonal’ change as a tire rotation for free. Also be careful about the Lugnuts you use. Rivian s are very specific bolts and patterns.

You are already there. Forum search. Many threads and site sponsors with wheels.

Entry level wheels are MSW Type 52. Search forum for mentions.

I think you'll encounter body damage without armor before you find the limit of the truck. The 22s are fine for light trails but they are vulnerable to rash; better with those tires than the stockers though. I have the black 22s which are worse for that. I have a second vehicle for serious 4-wheeling and only about 100 miles of off-road on the rivian in 10k miles. At 1% I'll keep the 22s. They'll take me on all dirt roads and occasional obstacles.

Lots of people go for atomic wheels or you can find someone here who wants to swap their 20s.

Either wheel, the Rivian would be limited to easier trails like fins n things or hell's revenge in Moab. Elephant Hill as an upper limit. Tackling Golden Crack, Poison spider or Kane Creek will surely bring damage forgetting about wheels. Remember that Rivian broke a bunch of vehicles trying to cross the Rubicon. This ain't a Toyota or Jeep.

I will do level 2-3 on my 20" and the stock Pirelli is not best for that. Your tires are better for off-roading especially for 20" version.

For your 22" I would stick with level 1 and 2. You can try level 3 with some rock sliders and see if that is something the vehicle can handle and you will have to account for the 22" tire / sidewall.

I normally air down my 20" to 30 lbs when going off-road.

One cool thing about the Rivian fur off-roading is the built in compressor. I just deflate to 30-35 have done fun then re inflate quickly back to 48 for the highway. Can’t do that in a Jeep without hauling a compressor and genset!

Rivian uses an arb compressor. You can buy them aftermarket or various other brands like viair.

Why would you need a genset? ARB and others make on-board 12V compressor kits that are wired to the vehicle's 12V electrical system. Some people even rig their AC compressor into inflation pumps.

I guess I’m used to great groups of Jeeps on a trail and one person brings one and everyone uses it. The end if the trip ‘party’. Yes you can wire to your car 12v battery all you want for one vehicle.
