Triad checking in. I have an LE R1T ordered. As for expected delivery date, I've come to the realization its not happening till their is a service center in the state.

Good to see proposed RAN chargers in the Eastern part of the state. The trip to Mattamuskeet would be tough without them.

Not that I've seen. Disappointingly, it seems that the entire southeast has not received much attention from Rivian, especially when it comes to physical locations.

However, my best guess would be in Charlotte.
If you look at the other threads going on after the S1 was released it sounds like us in NC/SC have some hurdles ahead. If my understanding is right Rivian is barred from operating both a direct sales center/selling vehicles AND direct service Centers in NC. NC is one of 7 states where they can't do both. I was doing some reading and it looks like Tesla had to apply to the DMV for an exception , they were denied one in Charlotte originally by local auto dealers. But by law Rivian cant just open a sales/service center, they will have to go through some exception process. Sounds like a pretty antiquated set of laws...

SC is home to, to the best of my knowledge, the largest car dealer conglomerate in the entire US (Hendrick), who will effectively kill any attempt by Rivian to change the laws here. The only way that I see any change as feasible in SC is if they built a manufacturing facility here, as that is the only way to affect substantive legislation within the state. Not sure if NC is in the same boat but if Tesla couldn't pull it off in Charlotte I wouldn't hold my breath.

Tesla did eventually pull it off, as they operate service centers in both Charlotte and Raleigh.

But I am concerned with how long this may delay Rivian delivering to people in the Carolinas.

I am less concerned about the timeline for delivery (because of where I am in the queue, and the fact that I placed my preorder with the desire to have the vehicle by the end of 2022), but I am very concerned that the current situation is going to significantly delay my ability to see and drive one. The way things are currently going, I don't see any way that I will be able to see a Rivian in person or drive one before summer 2022.

Tesla pulled it off because they only changed the laws after they got the two centers in, now they can't put any more in (Asheville for example) and no new vendors can come in.

I'm willing to head to VA/DC/MD to pick up mine... I believe I read that's how some of the states with Tesla bans got around it. Even though it's in the far reaches of our state, they could go the route like Tesla did in NM and build one in Cherokee (federal Indian lands).

However, I did do my civic duty and wrote to my state rep and senator (as well as Jeff Jackson) to let them know this is a major hinderance to EV and clean energy adoption

I'm happy to travel pretty much anywhere in the continental US to pickup my Rivian. My bigger concern is that Rivian may not allow me to do so (or will significantly delay when I am offered that option). And my biggest concern is how will we get serviced? It does not seem sustainable to dispatch repair vans from other states. That would be expensive and time consuming, and I imagine scheduling would be difficult. Furthermore, I would expect a local dealer or alliance would sue Rivian or at least make a complaint, as a van providing service within the State seems like it would violate the law -- even if it's a stupid law.

I plan to write some letters, as well. Perhaps it would be beneficial if some of us can coordinate to establish an effective template that we can ask others to use. A letter or two will only get a polite form-letter response and then will be round-filed... The only hope of changing this law is to be vocal and persistent. This isn't just bad for Rivian, but it's bad for other manufacturers (Lucid, for example), citizens of these states, and the climate.

I'm happy to write as well, but I've become quite bitter with regards to our state politicians. Unless that letter has folded up million dollar bills you can't count on any of them to do the right thing and listen to us.

I'm in Cary and just put down a deposit on an R1T a few days ago. I'm fine waiting until late 2022 to mid 2023 for delivery as my current vehicles have plenty of life still. Gives more time for improvements to the charging infrastructure as well.

I will say that my biggest concern is the lack of service centers in NC due to our strong dealer lobbies. I want to believe that Amazon owning 20% or so of Rivian will help sway some politicians (as those prime vans are supposed to be serviced by Rivian as well) but who knows.

sad but true. moved to nc from ma years ago - while i would never move back after experiencing the less stressful life, i miss govt that actually gets things done, rather than not even being able to pass a budget or constantly just trying to take down each other

Just wanted to start connecting with other Rivian Fans in the Triangle area. I have pre-ordered a LE R1S and would like to get to know other Rivian Fans in the area.
Live on the Outer Banks but travel often to Raleigh.

Chapel Hill LE Green R1T ordered Sept. 2019. The NC legislators are just patsies for auto dealers, other big donors and social conservatives. This dealer anti-competition and free market law will seriously delay getting our Rivians, but there is little we can do about it. The Native Americans make so much money with casinos that I doubt a car dealership that might make waves is a big attraction.

I would think that South Hill location is going to be our service center to get started and likely where they send Service Techs from until they can get approval to operate in our great state. Considering I can make it from my section of North Raleigh to South Hill in an hour its actually not a bad haul for a service tech. In fact I have a second place on Lake Gaston (VA Side) and I get people from Raleigh all the time up there to do work (landscape, plumbing, etc)
