Holy crap this system sounds complex. Will be interesting to see how all these valves hold up to years of abuse / wear.

In some ways it's fiendishly simple. I'm more worried about the air suspension personally.

Yes. Air shocks are my only point of concern.

however, this stuff is better than it was 10 years ago.

and there’s no crazy new technology in Rivian’s setup. It’s all refinements of existing systems.

besides, theres a nice long warranty ?

If it can do what they’ve done with it already(South America, rebelle rally, TAT, etc etc) with minimal breakage, I’m not worried. time will tell of course.

I’ve had the air shocks on my Jeep GC for over 7 years (around 70k miles)with no issues.
I remember being on the high altitude leg of a development test trip for the '96 Grand Cherokee and one of the air springs ruptured while on one of the offroad segments between Telluride and Ouray. That sucked, and was the reason I got my 2015 GC w/OR1 (steel springs) package rather than OR2 (air springs). Some things just stick with you. Keep in mind that the Grand Cherokee didn't end up getting air suspension for almost 20 years after that trip I was on. I had responsibility for the suspension control switch way back then.

If Rivian R1 vehicles have an air spring suspension as good as our 2006 Land Rover (anecdotally a low bar) we’ll all be fine.

I seem to recall we had our LR3’s air spring/shock units replaced at around 125,000 miles because one had a slow leak so I figured I may as well replace them all. About a year ago (~205,000 miles) we started getting occasional warning messages caused by valve block issues but it’s been well-behaved since we had the valve block replaced.

We haven’t had a catastrophic failure of the air spring system in 225,000 miles and counting… er, yet. Even when it displayed a warning message it did everything we needed it to do while off-road so we weren’t stranded.

During a particularly rough off-road trip a couple weeks ago I kept thinking, “I wonder how much better the Rivian will be?”
