I bought a pop up camper yesterday. I drove like 200 miles to get it and charged at a RAN on the way which had a trailer pull through. Cool! My return trip says I’m coming here as well so I won’t have to do weird crap to fit a trailer in a non trailer spot! One other EV charges at the RAN while I’m there, I think it is an Equinox. My wife and I both have aGyro from the nearby restaurant (I moved to VT 3 years ago, and haven’t had a Gyro the entire time, greek restaurants seem uncommon in VT)
Of corse as soon as I pick up the trailer it decides I need different charging stops, one 3 miles away (not 75 miles or so where the RAN is).
So I end up at a EA in the parking lot of a Denny’s (I don’t have a Gyro here). No trailer spots…but if you try hard enough you can make any chargers trailer friendly, right??
(During my charge time it a Bolt owner shows up and parks right in front of me, After the fact I realized the new trailer is an “off road special” & I should have used the grass on the other side of the chargers…I practice my reversing skills and arc the trailer back out of the parking lot entrance gaining enough space to go around the Bolt)
Next stop is a magic dock Tesla charger in the back of a gas station, also no trailer spots, again I come in from the side and line up better and only block one charger this time. A pickup parks behind my trailer, a few cars come and go in front of me, but they are gone quickly enough that I can choose a good time to go forward. The gas station doesn’t have any Gyros, but it does have a chicken crunch wrap. Unlike the Gyro it wasn’t any good, discarded after one bite. The Tesla chargers have a trash bin between each pair of chargers, cool. I unload all the trash from my R1S.
Next stop is another magic dock Tesla charger, grocery store lot. Sadly closed that late at night, so no bathrooms (also no Gyros). Not trailer friendly & I come in on the wrong side to block only one charger, and I’m exhausted by now. I just park across 4 chargers and take a nap, one of my dogs hops from the back seat and naps in my lap. Nobody uses any chargers while I’m there so I don’t have to move.
I get home before sunrise, but after twilight starts. Go to bed for a few hours then reverse the trailer into the garage and pop it up.
Kind of ironic that my only charge stop with trailer parking was before I got the trailer, but it worked out ok. Also it really wanted to minimize long charging sessions. It had planned more but I intentionally went past the planners recommended values and it frequently dropped out chargers. The last stop it wanted a 30% charge and to go to another charger. I just parked until I hit 100% and it eliminated my remaining charge stops. Not my normal MO, but I didn’t want to risk finding a charger I couldn’t wedge myself into with the trailer…plus it gave me time for a real nap!
