With tax it's nearly five grand. Only handles 35 mph wind? Good luck in the open desert. Insanity. For one tenth the cost I sleep well in my ground tent with comfy Nemo air pad and down quilt. And I don't risk spinal or cranium fracture falling off a stupid ladder in the middle of the night when I have to empty my bladder. It takes me a whopping three minutes to set up the tent and inflate the Nemo. If the weather is nice I don't bother setting up a tent. If folks have five grand burning a hole in their pocket, perhaps make a donation to your favorite national park. Drive well.

Easy solution here, just get your aim and elevation right and you don't even have to sit up!

I run a Skycamp Mini that I bought second hand for a song. Functionally identical to the Rivian branded one beside the upgraded mattress. I was skeptical of the practicality and use of an RTT but I got a good enough deal on mine that I figured it was worth trying out. After 7 nights in it, I am a firm believer! It’s really nice rolling up to a campsite in the dark and being setup in under 15 minutes. Being off the ground during wet PNW winters is also a great plus.

We sleep two adults and a young child in ours. It is cozy, but not overly tight. We’ll have to do something different as a family in another 3-5 years.

Based on the amount of time it takes to setup and take down (15 minutes each way), including stashing bedding, I would use this exclusively for stays of 3 nights and less. Beyond that and it is worthwhile to setup the canvas ground tent.

You sleep without a tent in the desert?

I don’t own a RTT, but the thing that intrigues me most about them is elevating from the ground to get away from snakes, scorpions and spiders.

I don't think there's testing done by anyone. While turned 180 looks more streamlined, the ducts in the spoiler would direct air right smack into the thicker end of the RTT and cause turbulence. Two YouTubers, that I know of, tested this and noticed a slight drop in efficiency (compared to taping over those ducts).
I taped my ducts to improve efficiency with my RTT mounted. Roughly 0.1 mi/kwh improvement.

And a testament to how well Rivian engineers did their development work, some of which is captured in video below. What isn't known is what happens if you mount the Skycamp Mini the "right" way, as iKamper has done.

Why is it $400 more than the regular mini with rocky black. Locks, bars and color?

I got the DLX Mini recently for $4695. So $100 more than the Rivian Skycamp version.

The Rivian Skycamp Mini 3.0 is missing two important things - (1) the cork bed that covers the aluminum floor, this keeps cold away, quietens the tent & reduces condensation, (2) the locks for the RTT straps - strange they decided to exclude that in the Rivian version.

It includes the self-inflating mattress from the DLX. That’s $350 on its own, so it looks like it’s only about a $50 markup for the Rivian branding and adventure key compatibility.

It’s lovely, for sure, but I think I’m leaning towards the unbranded Yakima Sky Tent for this summer, or maybe the Air Cinch one promoted on here often with the pre-order discount. I can’t imagine dropping 3x as much unless it has solar or cooks for me, haha.

If KĂĽat would release their IBEX rack for the R1T... this tent and that would be my ideal setup.

I was about to buy the CINCH Air Cruiser ($2399) , and now just seeing the iKamper Skycamp mini ($4595) come out. The main advantage of the iKamper is the hard shell top, but not sure if that is worth the extra money, what do you all think?

Just placed an order. I had my mind set on the iKamper SkyCamp Mini DLX anyway, so this Rivian branded one is pretty close. White canvas makes it brighter on the inside if you don’t need black out, and may need to spray some water repellent so it’s easier to clean. Got the free $500 stove that I was also going to get anyways. Perfect timing for the upcoming Overland Expo West!
