Wow. The folks who designed these incentives have no clue about the cost of batteries. We literally can’t get a Max Pack and ANY other features to get this incentive. *sigh* We are now skipping out on $15k in incentives because we want a truck with the range and towing we need.

Considering Washington hasn’t offered a new EV rebate in several years, I’m excited anything is on the table at all.

95%+ of vehicles sales by volume will qualify... that's not Rivian max pack.

I have been afraid that if we order the max pack that we wouldn't be eligible for the tax credit. 'Looks like Inslee will kill it for us with max packs. Oh well, order an ev bike!

My assumption that the MSRP limits on these tax credit proposals is to encourage manufacturers to prioritize development of affordable electric vehicles to speed mass adoption instead of luxury-priced EVs with limited market opportunity.

However, what's available now are expensive EVs and I don't really like how this legislation is limited in impact for the cars that are available today.

Also, This 80k cap for SUVs is definitely going to cause manufacturers to raise rooflines and classify cars as SUVs in order to make sure more qualify for discounts. Even though lower profile roofs would probably be more efficient and have a smaller environmental impact due to smaller battery requirements and less dependence upon the existing power infrastructure which is still very reliant on coal and nuclear.

Late update, but this Bill never got a lot of press coverage. While most of the proposal was passed, only $25m, down from $100m, was approved for EV incentives. No program yet exists for how to distribute that money, and while it could start as early as June it is likely not to begin until the next biennium.

“
The legislature appropriated $207 million for charging infrastructure and $120 million for electric-vehicle incentives through the end of the next biennium, in June 2025. Included in the latter is $95 million reserved for the next legislative session, while $25 million will become available in June.

Rebates on electric vehicles and charging infrastructure could be part of that program but are not explicitly required, according to the governor's office.

"It will take some time for Commerce [department] to develop the program so when it would actually begin to be spent and what it would pay for is still to be worked out," said Mike Faulk, Inslee's spokesperson.

"We want to move forward on that but we're probably going to see a main investment of that in a normal budget year," Carlyle said, adding that the principal funding for electric-vehicle subsidies will probably happen next year during the longer session of the biennial legislative cycle.”

Thanks for sharing. I bet it will cost them $12.5M to set up and administer the program. I question how much might actually get to car owners. Strange money was allocated with no real plan. We must be rich. Ha ha. That said anything is better than nothing.
