Picked up this beauty yesterday and absolutely love how it drives A perfect blend of our Tesla Y and a full size Range Rover imo Interesting observation is that I’m fully charged and plugged in my destination 160 miles with over 6000 feet of elevation gain (SF bay to Truckee/Tahoe) and it wants me to stop approx midway in Sacramento to charge for 20 minutes. App shows me leaving at the 420 mi of max range, depleting to 231 mi of range (after 90 miles of actual distance) at Sacramento, charge up to 346 miles of range, arrive Truckee at 98 miles of remaining charge (97 miles of actual distance). Was hoping to make this trip without charging enroute. Feels like the estimated depletion for the first leg is conservative. Have found this forum very informative, thank you

I used to have a vacation house up in South Lake and drove up a lot with the R1T (Quad 20" AT Pirelli's). Going up I need a charge as some of those long 6% grades will drop efficiency down to 1 mile/kWH but going back, if I baby it and there's not a large headwind I can make it back on a charge.

That being said, someone in the truck always has to pee about 1/2 way so I just plan a charging stop at the same time.

My recommendation is to do a few trips with a charge stop up & back and see what your average consumption/range is that you feel comfortable with. Now that we're coming into Winter, you should get a good estimate when the truck isnt' as efficient.

I'd put your trip into ABRP and see what it says. Also check to see what your minimum charge percentage is set to when calculating charging stops. It may be asking you to charge at an artificially high SoC.

Elevation and speed will annihilate range, and 6000 ft is pretty significant. But you probably know that from your MY already.

Thanks for inputs. Quick update, when I set the destination in the vehicle itself, it indicates no need to stop and arrival at 126 miles remaining, over the 20 pct default minimum. Somehow app calculates different (same defaults though). Might be that use history very limited. Cheers !

Couple things. The Rivian trip planning defaults to your trip starting battery % being the vehicle's current charge but when you do the trip it will likely be higher.

I recently ran Cupertino to Donner Lake in our R1S Dual Max on a hot day with 2 bikes on the hitch rack without stopping and needed 350 miles of rated range (out of 369 at 100%).

You basically need 80 miles of real horizontal range just for the vertical climb up the hill. Of course on the way down you are getting a 40 range mile bonus.

SF itself to Olympic valley last time I used about 75% of the battery going there (tri max), only about 50% coming back. I drove with no consideration for conservation so I’d have a decent baseline. There was construction on 80 on the way down the mountain that slowed me down and improved efficiency a bit. But you should have zero issues with a max battery making Truckee. I think to tpoltron’s point you’re prob seeing current charge in the app not 100%.

Quick update: app was definitely wrong and arrived in Truckee with 35% remaining. Weather mild 60 and running stock 22 wheel/tires. Spot on that you need “extra” range on top of actual distance for the 75 mile climb from foothills (Rocklin) - for me it was 60 so assume more in the winter. Last but not least, the vehicle Navi estimate that I would arrive w some 130 miles of remaining range was unexpectedly accurate. Two thumbs up for max pack

Congrats! Man that's one awesome spec. The dark package and sport dark wheels really look nice against that red canyon 😎

Yeap. rivian always very conservative in predicting to make sure you don't get stranded somewhere without charging. Took a bunch of 275 miles one trip which I know I always can make it without stop to charge.

Rivian are all over Truckee. My Gen 1 R1T with AT tires needs to stop for 20mns to make it. Max pack is the ticket for sure.

I have a Gen1 2024 RT1 Dual Large 21" Road Wheels. I do intend to go in winter to Tahoe. I'm in Fremont 230 miles to Incline Vilage. Even with 100% (360 miles) start a charge stop would be warranted. Anyone with a similar config done the drive in winter?

Some real-world data from last winter, Richmond to South Lake with R1T PDM Max AT, burned basically 75%
If you're leaving from deeper in the bay area can probably still make it on a single charge, but that being said do you really want to risk getting stuck in a road closure somewhere in the mountains on 50 or 80 after dark in winter with a near empty battery?
