Is it included with the Ascent trim at least?
I picked up my Ascent yesterday and it wasn't included; I wasn't too upset as I never used the one I got with my gen 1 R1T - it just sat in the safe and somehow always had low battery.

Too many
My Model Y as with all Tesla products do not come with fobs. I am stoked to have one for my Rivian, but rarely use it. And I assume most folks are that way so in the spirit of achieving profitability I can understand why they stopped including it. Just my 2 cents as an owner and shareholder.

BTW, service has informed me that the G1 key fob is unavailable with no ETA. So don’t lose yours. Personally, my fob works much better than my phone, so it’s a shame they bungled this up.

Also, several drivers of my Rivians are unwilling to give Rivian 24x7 access to their location in order to use the phone as a key, so the fobs are pretty much a requirement.

Wow I am surprised they sold out that quick! Didn't realize there were that many people who wanted those that badly. My phone key works very well, no need for a key fob for me!

Yes for G1. I don't see why it should be different for G2.
They use a different wireless technology. Gen 1 fob uses Bluetooth.
Gen 2 fobs use UWB. Gen 1 vehicles do not have UWB capability

Gen 2 vehicles still do support Bluetooth as well, so the fact that a gen 1 fob won't work on gen 2 is most likely an arbitrary limitation just to keep things simple.

I was responding specifically to below.

Anyone know if you can assign the fob to a profile? I'm willing to buy a key fob if it can act like other cars key fobs that are assigned to a memory seat.

& sold out by lunchtime on the 1st day! Honestly they desperately need to work out their supply chain issues!!!
Massively underestimated the will of referral points holders looking to spend money on something that isn't available for much cheaper on Amazon :)

I hope that greedy eBayers haven't bought up a bunch to sell at inflated prices. (Used to happen all the time with hard-to-find Tesla adapters and accessories.) Not seeing Gen 2 fobs on eBay yet.

***
QUESTIONS:

1. So, a Gen 2 R1S vehicle can not use a Gen 1 R1S fob that looks like this:

IMG_5514.JPG
IMG_5517.JPG

correct? (I was told that it is a 2024 [Gen 1] R1S fob.)

2. Is there a way to be alerted (by email, text from Rivian?) when the Gen 2 fob becomes available again? (I am not seeing it on the Gear Page.)
In answer to my own questions, here is what I think is going on:
  1. Apparently, Gen 1 and Gen 2 fobs are only compatible with Gen1 vehicles and with Gen 2 vehicles, respectively. If true, a Gen 1 fob will not work with a Gen 2 vehicle, and a Gen 2 fob will not work with a Gen 1 vehicle. (Drat.)

And has always been true, R1T and R1S fobs only work with R1T and R1S vehicles, respectively.

So this means that there are now:
    |
    1. Gen 1 - R1T fobs,
    2. Gen 1 - R1S fobs,
    3. Gen 2 - R1T fobs, and
    4. Gen 2 - R1S fobs.
      |
that look very similar, but with no inter-compatibility among them (and definitely[!] no possibility of confusion or mix-up when purchasing new or used ).
      |
  2. I do not yet see a specific 'alert' link (that will, for example, add your email address to a list of people waiting for a particular accessory to become available). (Tesla uses such a function on its webpages, and it can be a handy tool to keep up-to-speed when accessory products become available again.)

Followup #1: Language from a Rivian message to me (12/23/24) -- "At this time all I can say is that we will try our best to notify everyone in our community once Key Fob is available again on Gear Shop. There is currently no option on our website to receive e-mail notifications when products are available again or if new products have been added. Rest assured that we are working diligently on improving our website and customer experience each day."

Followup #2: In lieu of an official Rivian alert procedure, we have helpful Rivian Forums members. Thanks @Dwight_Schrute.

We've ordered one of these to update the Rangefinder Keyfob surround. We'll post a complete overview of the differences between the two when we get it.

We'll probably end up giving it away after the fact to promote the new Rangefinder.
