UPDATE: It must be karma - just moments ago, I heard back from my Rivian Guide that they have a VIN number for me! Literally - just hours after my original post. Thanks for all of your comments and feedback. - I am going to take delivery.
FWIW I like my Rivian the more I drive it. Early Nov pickup (in Brooklyn), about 6k miles so far, no issues. Don’t spend too much time on the forums, they can make you paranoid about your truck.

Nov 2021 R1S Explore Base $70k. Now forced into Adventure for $5500 more

I originally had the Explorer Base but changed it to accommodate my wife. My wife couldn't handle the wait and we are due for a MYP in the next couple of weeks. Shure wish I had the Explorer Base now. I had a early Lucid order. Canceled it a week ago or so. I don't see how Saudi Arabia can continue to fund them.

The 4 motor Rivian should survive as a collector edition.
Advances in battery technology could be troublesome.

I also have a Cybertruck reservation placed on day two. Have had my R1T since June. It hasn't been perfect, but service is pretty good about addressing whatever issues I've had. As a former very happy Model 3 owner, the Rivian is just a much better, higher-quality vehicle. I suspect the CT is going to be a truck that just can't compete with the R1T in terms of quality on many fronts. Take delivery of your R1T and you will be very happy, even if you have some minor kinks that service will work through for you.

I think that whatever Rivian is cooking up for the R2 series will determine the company's fate.

Tesla's models S and X were exceptional vehicles. But, I believe it is the 3 and the Y that power Tesla. Similarly, Rivian's R1 series will dazzle, while the R2's will have to pay the freight.

One thing is for certain, vehicle manufacturing is not for the faint of heart.

First off, I have had my order in for an R1T since February 2022, so under the old pricing. I also have an order in for the Cybertruck @ ~ 600K in line. I LOVE the looks and performance of the R1T and the Cybertruck looks I like, but not as well. I have been looking forward to my "April-May 2023" delivery window - but... As time draws nearer to the actual purchase, I continue to read about what Rivian has/is taking away - reasons I wanted it to begin with. The Camp Kitchen is still nowhere to be found, the automatic Tonneau cover is gone, as well as the Fronk 12v charger, now the 12v charger under the center dash and the elimination of the Meridian sound system (with an in-house replacement). Then we see the financial numbers like in this article: https://apple.news/AJYQyrW7PQxaac3mOMmpL9A

All of this really concerns me, even though I REALLY want an R1T, if the company is going to survive once Tesla, who has a proven track record of not only mass producing vehicles, but being profitable - comes out with the Cybertruck. I am concerned I am going to have an R1T that is ~2 years old, the company does under and no one is updating the software, and because of this, I would not be able to sell it if I wanted to. Is it just me? Any help here? How in the world is Rivian going to hang on long enough, and get enough mass production to become profitable, especially once the Cybertruck comes out - with all of its features?

If Rivian goes under, it still go through s bankruptcy proceeding, most likely someone buys assets and warranties, etc.

Looks like you've made your decision, enjoy.

How about the fact that Amazon is a big investor/purchaser of Rivian vehicles. Do not believe in any way shape or form they would "allow" the company to go under.

There sure are many used R1T's for sale, many with less than 1000 miles. Some have only <100. Just a short while ago there were none available on the used market.

I thought the same but it is not a given that Amazon would step in. They seem to be all about cost reduction this year (and probably next).

It always blows my mind how people will fall for Elon Musk getting up on stage and making promises expressly so that they'll loan him hundreds of millions of dollars, interest free. He'll probably make more money never building it.

There's one born every minute.
He did this exact thing in 2016, stole ten times as much cash from me as an interest-free loan, and had the gall to deliver my model 3 that I have been driving for over five years problem-free. What a scam artist!! /s

Remember the Amazon phone that was supposedly the iPhone killer? Exactly…

Another company will buy Rivian if it were to get that close to bankruptcy. Too much tech and infrastructure to let that go to waste
Kind of like how HP bought Palm (remember PDAs and Palm phones?) and promptly proceeded to drive it into the ground? webOS which was ahead of its time in many ways was then spun off to LG and now it is some crap clunky tv software. Moral of story: getting bought by someone bigger does not translate to the brand or products surviving, in fact most of the time they die a slow and painful death into oblivion.

Not saying this is absolutely Rivian’s fate, but it seems to be trending in that direction unless they pull up from their current nose dive for a dramatic save.

The “experts” said the same thing for many years about Tesla going bankrupt and now they are the solid EV company.
Here’s the fallacy, thinking all EV startups can just follow in Tesla’s footsteps and do great. Check out Lucid, they are the canary in the coal mine here. Most startups will fail (Saturn, DMC, and many prior to that) and all US automakers except Ford and Tesla have gone bankrupt.

Tesla also has a track record of removing and taking things away, including usb outlets. They also asked people to pay $10k-$15k years ago for ”full self driving” that has never and probably will never materialize.

And no one yet knows what they ACTUALLY will include in a cybertruck. Literally everything about it other than it’s exterior is speculation. Tesla also has unbranded stereo systems in all their vehicles.

Get whichever will serve your purposes the best.
Unbranded?? DISGUSTING. 😡
