R1T Dual Motor ( Gen 2 )
Rivian support in multiple channels said it wouldn't work, and after having dealt with what seemed like a scam in the market place with someone taking advantage of the lack of R1T Gen2 Fobs I decided to try out an R1S fob which has been mostly in stock. So for science I decided to try to pair the R1S Fob to the R1T and lo and behold it works! Front truck & Tailgate lowering also works fine! Consider this myth busted - R1S fobs and R1T are interchangeable at least with Gen 2.

OK, this is very upsetting, as it completely destroys my carefully-constructed fob analysis here. The pillars of Rivian fob information have been shaken to their foundations.

Given this, has anyone actually tried to pair a Gen 2 fob to a Gen 1 vehicle? (Or Gen 1 fob to a Gen 2 vehicle?)

Is nothing sacred?

(The eBay scalpers may be quaking in their boots.)

No, no one has tried. Because Gen 1 vehicles do not let you pair additional key fobs. We have the "add a fob" button in the app, but if you click it, you just get an error message saying you need to buy a newer car if you want to use that button.

Only Rivian techs can add a key to a Gen 1 vehicle, and they are not going to agree to pair the wrong key even if it was technically possible (and it probably isn't).

For the people who care the image is different and rivian sold 1 key people would complain. I am still trying to find the benefit of the fob. Phone and cards work great never using a fob again if I can help it. same with my I4, key sits in the drawer at home, never gets used.

My old school mind mentally likes the idea of a physical key fob, but in practice I don’t use it. I use my phone, with the key card in my wallet for emergencies when the phone stops working (happened twice!). I guess it would be useful for a valet or loaning the vehicle to someone, or if your phone is dead. Unfortunately, I did lose my Gen 1 key fob and had to pay to have it replaced because I have a lease. So there’s a downside to having a key fob. I think it was smart of Rivian to make this optional for Gen2.

I have used my card only one, but use my key fob everyday.

If the fob was never available, would i have survived? Sure, but it is definitely good to have.

[especially in the few cases where I have forgot both my wallet (with the card) and my phone inside the vehicle and it is locked]

I want a fob cause I love to use frunks for storage so when walking up hitting the button so it's open when I step up. Also, I always find myself running out to my truck and often don't grab my phone off my desk or something, so having the fob on my belt loop like an old man makes it awesome.

Combine those things with the easy handing someone the key instead of giving a full tutorial on how to use the key card and I'm a fob fan.

For those who can 100% use the phone key I'm very happy for you. My bedroom is above the carport area and its nonstop owl hooting at night. I even adjusted the settings per the forum recommendations and it still goes off too much. Not even mentioning if I'm heading back to the car with groceries I can reach in the pocket, feel the raised lock button and know which is which and open the frunk or tailgate without pulling a phone out.

I also kept finding with my phone ( Android not iPhone so that may be why ) my car would unlock from like 200 feet away then not be responsive other times when I walk right up to the car. My phone supports UWB and when I had a Tesla loaner their phone key worked almost perfectly.

The fob has been night and day better for me but again I wish I could say the phone key was all I needed. The fact the fob still works with 0% battery also is a huge plus if you don't have the keycard with you all the time.

Either way for anyone who wants the fob sooner, get the R1S fob as the R1T fob hasn't restocked since I took delivery.

Two reasons I want it:
1. Easy to hand it to the car wash kids and/or a valet. They know what to do with a fob - no explanation needed.
2. My wife is not likely to ever be a PaaK user. I plan to give her the fob and tie it to her profile.
