I install and remove the tailgate pad for carrying bikes frequently, and got sick of holding up the spring loaded flap with my head to install it, so designed and 3d printed a "kickstand" that uses the cargo loops as a latch to hold it up while I install/remove the pad.

Sharing in case anyone else only has two hands and is sick of using their head as a kickstand.

That's really nifty.

This might be cheeky, but unless you're going to start an Etsy store and sell 'em, would you mind sharing the STL via Thingiverse (or similar) and adding the link to your original post?

Nice work!

I know exactly the pain you’re talking about. I cut a piece of scrap wood that I use to hold it up - serves the same purpose but your design is way more elegant. And it doesn’t get misplaced.

I 2nd the request to share the STL if you’re so inclined.

Maybe I’m just Dumb, but why would you do this? Why not close the tail gate ? 😂
He said he frequently uses the tail gate pad and needs to constantly move the flap and hold it with his head. Now he solved the issue with this 3d print

Because you have to feed the straps between the flap and the tailgate.

I just drop the middle straps through, lift the gate, snap them and tighten them. The outside straps don't require the flap to be moved much because they are on the edge of the gate.

I haven't had trouble with the flap but I do think it would be easier if it were out of the way.

This would have been great when I had to remove and reinstall my tailgate.

Y’all 3D printer folks are impressive. You look beyond complaining about difficulties to finding concepts of solutions and then turning those concepts into actual solutions.
There's not one single room in my house without a variety of 3D printed solutions to first world problems and annoyances.

It's probably not strong enough, but, it's a nice concept for something I would like, because if you have a load of dirt (or some other loose material) in a tarp in the bed, and you want to close a manual tonneau, you have to open the bed. (which dumps all the stuff out, making it tough to get closed again...)

Something strong enough to hold a bit of weight would be nice for that particular use case. :) I wouldn't have thought about a hook to the edge though, I've just been trying to figure out how a strap could be used for that...

I guess the strength of the filaments can vary? I remember the old ones were pretty weak. There have to be filaments out there these days that are pretty strong (not like brittle strong but resilient strong).

Yes.

Not really, there were always many options. Maybe people weren't using them a lot, don't know, but my friends and I were making really solid ABS parts 15+ years ago.

There are very strong options, and "strong" means a lot of different things. The most basic plastic is PLA, which is hard, but brittle, and not UV stable, or heat stable. There are many others. For durable car parts I like nylon-carbon fiber, which is super solid yet resilient and machinable if needed. For general car parts parts I like PETG, others prefer ASA. Both are strong mechanically, heat resistant, UV stable. Many of my shop parts are also PETG. Household things vary, depending on use.

You can also decide on wall number, wall thickness, infill percentage and type, and so much more which affect strength.

This is maybe 20% of the settings possible.
