Winter tires on the 22s would be much better than the ATs on the 20s. Nokian recommends a specific winter tire for the Rivian 22s:

RIVIAN R1S/R1T
Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV
275/50 R 22

Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV
275/50 R 22”

I’ve looked at the Nokian options and have been considering them. I agree that their performance on snow and ice will be better than the 20” ATs; however, I have other uses for the 20” ATs that will likely make them a better option, year round, for me than the 22”dedicated winters. But if all you’re interested in is the best winter tires, there’s probably options in the 20” size, as well as the Nokian 22”s, that will be better than the 20” AT Pirellis.

I spent a little while surfing around, and a lot of the 20" winter tires were not up to Rivian's load rating (115). Other than the Pirelli OEM AT tire, the options I saw were the Bridgestone Blizzak LT, the General Grabber Arctic LT, and the Firestone Winterforce LT.

At 22", Michelin had the X-Ice Snow/SUV.

@Hoo D. Hoo - I've used those Blizzak tires on my old Xterra. They are no joke in the snow.

Good to know!

I've always wanted the ease of a spare set of rims and snow tires, but didn't have the space to store them, or the overwhelming need to justify the purchase. I added a shed and some covered carport storage this year, and now have the room.

So if you're saying we can buy a 20" wheel/tire package from a service center, I should be able to buy a 21" spare package right now?

One can hope and try. But that's not published by Rivian anywhere. That's what one Service Center guy told one of our fellow order-holders here on the board. If you're lucky enough to get delivery, ask at the Service Center.

Otherwise, there's always after-market. Or wait until production levels up, and they get around to selling them in the gear shop. The latter will happen eventually -- it only makes sense. But probably not by this winter.

Yeah - I was actually pleasantly surprised by the pricing. As you note, the Pirellis are $400 each, so $800 per wheel seemed pretty reasonable given lack of other options.
I assume they also come with TPMS sensors?
