Preparing for something i was hoping to hold off till December.. A flat tire changed that. Although I am considering just getting one from the members her on the board too.

I am comparing some different tires.

I dont really drive off road anymore, I sold my cabin earlier this year. Doesnt mean I wouldnt like to do it with the Rivian Clubs here in Colorado. I do mostly highway driving, owned my R1S for 7 months, and already over 6000 miles. I am a very spirited driver. I do use the "track" option at least 2-3 times a week. I also use the snow option a lot in the winter when the weather calls for it.

I do drive in the snow, as in, when everyone else stays home, I still go out. Doesnt really bother me, no matter how deep it is.

I have really loved the Michelin Defender LTX M/S that I have been running on my Envoy for the last 15+ years. Always had great tread wear, traction in snow or rain, etc.

But you guys have also had experience with the Continentals, and you speak very highly of them. I have never owned this brand.

So I am considering the:

Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 115H (EV Rated) at $1856.35 and no rebate
Continental Terrain Contact A/T 115T at $1734.53 plus a $110 Rebate. Total $1624.53
Continental Terrain Contact H/T 115H at $1613.77 plus a $110 Rebate. Total $1503.77

Would rather have the Michelin Platinum's, but who knows when the size I need is coming out.

Whats the general feeling...

Past all that...

I am currently driving my old and very trusty 2004 GMC Envoy with very high miles.
Comparing apples to oranges here...
The seats themselves are so much better than the Rivians
The driving position is so much smaller than the Rivians
The steering is so much heavier than the Rivians
Obviously, the power is no where near the Rivians
The ride is 100% better than the Rivians

Just got an email from Michelin about the Platinum..

Hello Brian,

Thanks for contacting the Michelin Consumer Care Team.

Thank you for your interest in the Defender LTX Platinum.

We are sorry but the Defender LTX Platinum is a light truck tire only available in a very limited number of LT-metric sizes with 20' rims and there is no listing for a future launch for 22" rim sizes at this time. However your request will be forwarded to our Marketing Division for future consideration.

I just confirmed my R1S order from the Shop...

And my heart is about to jump out of my chest. Not from excitement, but from being scared. The anxiety is real!

I have never purchased a new car before, and in fact, I never intended to ever buy a new car.

I have never paid more than 10k for a car.. This is quite a bit more than that!

I am a car guy/wrench head. I love turning wrenches. My body.. Not so much any more. 1 blown disc, and 4 semi-blown discs will do that... And having 2 kinds under the age of 5!

Any words of wisdom out there?

As configured is in my signature.
I was very nervous also when we picked up ours about a month ago. They are amazing machines sure to provide us with years of enjoyment and utility.. Super happy with mine. Enjoy!

Just got off the phone with Rivian, if I need a tire replacement, the cost is $673...

Uhh, yea, about that, if I need a tire replacement, you can leave it, and I will take it to Discount Tire, and get either the Continentals or Michelin, or buy the spare set from the member here.

Does anyone have an opinion about which way to go, and why? (about the tires listed above)

Rivian tech came out this morning, pulled the tire off, and could not find a leak.

We know there is a leak, just where? I filled it to 49 Sunday afternoon, and by Monday night, it was down to 35.

Will have to take it to Discount Tire and see if they can find the leak, and figure out the next step from there.

Had a odd one last night. Got home from work, plugged in my R1, and went inside to have dinner..

Opened my up, and it said it wasnt charging.

Go out to my garage, unlock the R1, and look at the dash, and it says its a unsupported charger. Opened my app again, and it says charger is offline.

Since this is a Rivian Branded charger, the first words out of my mouth were of the WTF variety.

Went out to my breaker panel, flipped the breaker, waited a couple minutes, flipped it back on, waited for it to connect to the wi-fi, plugged in my truck, and she was charging... Thankfully!

Would you buy it if you had to do this all over again?

Are we talking the charger or the truck?

If you are talking about the truck...
I would have to say....
Maybe?

I do like the truck, the power is great, and the truck has been very reliable. My wife refuses to even learn how to drive the truck (which is good for me!) as it has to much power... But there are things that are just wrong about the truck.

Built in America, where most Americans are fat. Good luck fitting in these seats. They are just to narrow. I will admit this is not only a Rivian problem thou.
Comes with a great warranty, but parts availability is sketchy (at best).
I am needing warranty work done, but I dont dare get it done because I know it will cause more problems.
So many changes made to the G1's for cost savings, that some of us early adopters would have paid to have had, or not to have had. But we were never given the option. 3rd row seating, frunk 12v port, horns, Meridian, lower console 12v port, etc.
A few things that make no sense to not make an option. The glass roof is the biggest example. All of us have it, a lot of us have just gone out and bought a glass cover cause we dont want it, myself included.
OEM Tires are one of the worst tires I have ever had. Luckily replacements for some are available, and are far cheaper, and far better.
Where is my Cruise Control Resume Button? Where is my Cruise Control without adaptive cruise?
The ventilated seats are marginal at best.

A few other things as well, but I wont mention them because all it does it wind up the Rivian Loyalist.

For the price point, at least for us early adopters, this is a great truck, and worth exactly what I paid for it. Would I have paid more for it? Not a chance.

In my some regards, my 21 year old GMC with a lot of miles is better... And in others worse.

If you are talking about the charger...
NO. The Tesla Uni charger is a better charger, cheaper, has fewer problems. I think it also covers more charger plug types?

Another fun day chatting with Rivian Service.

My vent on the left side of my steering wheel wont move, and is stuck pointing far left, at the door.

I have a service scheduled to come out Sept 14th. Thought I would tack on this repair for the same time. Its to get a spare tire installed....

Rivian on their own accord rescheduled for Sept 17, and never bothered to tell me.

Thankfully I needed service, and found out.

They are telling me that the mobile service appts for my area are only available on Tuesday... And that the service center rescheduled it to coincide with their Tuesday availability. WTF???? No one ever told me.. and I am fairly close to the SC, why would their even be a problem with my "area".

Sitting in a chat window now waiting for them to figure it out.

Latest update installed last night when I got home from work.

No issues to report as of yet... The radio volume thing scared me. Have previously been running my volume at about 18-23 depending on what I am listening to..

This morning the volume I left it at about blasted me out of the truck! Will have to play more with it later.

So I just had an odd thing happen...

I have an appt to drop off my R1 at the SC this afternoon for all the odd glitchs from the recent buggy update. Went out to clean the truck up for the appt, and I get a warning message on the screen.. Critical Update In Progress! Do Not Interrupt!

Thats all it said. I came back to my office to grab my phone, so I could get a pic of it, and its not on the screen, and everything is turned off. I am assuming its still in the process of doing this "critical Update". Will find out shortly.

Edit: My App shows Update in Progress with no further info..

So the "critical update" finished installing... Only to find out its just the normal update thats currently being pushed.. Wonder if Rivian forced it on mine since I was taking it in for update related bugs...

Anyways..

Get to the service center, and they told me no one had advised them that I needed a loaner.. I calmly, as I could, explained to them I have kids, and no uber/lyft is going to allow me to install 4 kids seats... The loaner has been needed, and I even explained it to the lady that called me yesterday, and she confimed that I had a loaner in the file...

They apologized, and started checking in my truck... Uhm.. wait a minute. No loaner, no truck being dropped off. Oh but you can come get the loaner tomorrow. And how exactly am I going to do that? I have to get home today, take my kids to school in the morning, and then get to work in the morning.

I felt like I was dealing with someone that had less than 1 brain cell.

I told them my schedule, and they said they would move things around, as long as it was dropped off for my appt time of 10am, they would be ok.

Anger levels rising again

Outside of my kids, I also have work... The soonest I can drop it off is 130pm as I take my lunch at 130pm every day. Well I guess we can make that work, but you may be in the loaner for a few extra days because of us having to move things around.... Not my problem, and I dont care. I just want my truck to be "safe" again. The phantom hard braking is making it so I cant take my kids out on the weekend, and I am stuck driving my wives mini-van. Just get it fixed.

So I wasted my lunch break at work to drive to the SC, just to return from the SC with the same vehicle, and no lunch to show for it. Luckily my adoring wife packed me 2 apples, and 2 bananas.

The Chevy Silverado EV is starting to look better every day... Only if they made a 3 row SUV.
Maybe the Kia EV9??? Model Y??? Model X???

Nope Nope... I am in this for the long haul... In this for the long haul... Gotta keep telling myself that. Although it is getting harder to tell myself that.
